Women's Game Previews - Round 10

Eastern Mavericks v North Adelaide Rockets, Sat, May 29th, 6.30pm at Mount Barker
This match looms as a mini final for both teams with the North (5th) and Eastern (6th).  In round 2 only two points separated the sides, Eastern prevailing 68 – 66. Since that time North has lost Carla Boyd to injury but for Eastern, promising junior Alex Wilson (19.5ppg) who has played three matches this season, will be available. The clash of the prime movers in Tess Madgen (Eastern) and Jo Hill (North) could well decide the outcome of the contest. North Coach Mike McKay will be keen to avoid the fadeout that the Rockets have suffered in the final quarter of their previous two matches when they scored only 4 points against the Sabres and 6 points against the Bearcats. North will be keen to arrest the slide and stop Eastern's move into the top five. A finals berth at the end of season may rest on the result.

Forestville Eagles v West Adelaide Bearcats, Sat, May 29th, 6.30pm at Wayville
With both clubs sitting in the top 5, the Eagles (2nd) and with the Bearcats (3rd) coming off narrow losses last round, each side will be motivated to record victory to maintain their hold on a top 3 spot. Forestville had a modest start to the game in their loss to the Flames when they could only manage 10 points in the first quarter, a repeat of round 1 when they defeated the Warriors. Last round against the Sabres, West started well but were undone when they were outscored in the second half. When Forestville were successful in the first clash this season, the team had an even spread of scorers with Jessica Mahony leading the way with 16 points. Since that time Mia Newley (Eagles) and Nikita-Lee Martin (Bearcats) have been the leading scorers for their respective teams and their output this game will be crucial to each team's success.  In round 2, Forestville won with their dominance of the first and third quarters, but it will need an even four quarter performance to repeat the result this clash.

Central Districts Lions v Woodville Warriors, Sat, May 29th, 6.30pm at Starplex
Little separated the two sides when they met earlier in the season with the Warriors setting up the win (63 -61) in the first quarter. The Lions had their best quarter of the season when they rattled on 26 points in the final period. A similar four quarter result would almost certainly see them record their first win of the season. Providing Ingrid Richards and Katherine Perkas (Warriors) re-join the line-up, Woodville should bounce back from last week's defeat. How the respective imports Mackenzie O'Neil (Warriors) and Amber Land (Lions) perform will have a big bearing on the outcome. Lions Coach Winston Folland will be looking for an improved conversion rate from his shooters Dayna Roberts and Elizabeth Oermann and Warriors Coach Lynne Holland will be looking for the same thing from Brooke Gathercole, April Brown and Ashleigh White if they are to win away from home.

South Adelaide Panthers v Norwood Flames, Sat, May 29th, 6.30pm at Marion
South Adelaide, coming off a 23 point win against the Lions last start, faces the acid test this week against the Norwood Flames who are emerging as one of the form sides of the season. The inclusion of Jess Foley (Flames) who has averaged 30ppg since joining the team in Round 7 has significantly improved their offensive potency. South has yet to beat a side above them on the premiership table but if they are to participate in the final series this year need to find ways to win against the better sides. The main stays for the Panthers have been Sarah Peddle, Claire Johnson, Taya Crockford and Ursula Richards, and they will all need big games if the team is to clinch an upset victory. Rachel Herrick (Flames) has been dominant in the keyway in recent games and her influence will need to be curtailed whilst also restricting Rebecca Duke and Amanda MacDermot who can be damaging.

Southern Tigers v Sturt  Sabres, Sat, May 29th, 6.30pm at Morphett Vale
Tigers coach Willie Jennette will be all the more confident about facing the Sabres this round after his team's fantastic win against the Bearcats last week. Although the Tigers started slowly, a brilliant third quarter set up the win against their more highly fancied opponent, with the trio of Robyn Jennings, Ashleigh Spencer and Madeline Cunningham doing the majority of the scoring to earn the win. On the first occasion the teams met, the Sabres scored the points with three players in double figures led by Brooke Sidebottom and Kara Hargreaves (both with 13 points) and Bree Farley (11 points). If the game is tight then Ashleigh Spencer (Tigers - 23/26) and Caroline Burgess (Sabres - 25/30) can be relied upon from the free throw line.  Ashleigh Spencer did not play on the last occasion the two sides met nor did Sturt's Monique Bowley and Hannah Richards.
