Women's Reviews - Round 9

West Adelaide Bearcats v Southern, Tigers, Sat, May 22nd, 6.30pm at Port Adelaide
In the upset of the Women’s round the 3rd placed Bearcats were defeated by the Tigers who were sitting in 8th position. Southern struggled in the first half and found itself in trouble at half time when the Bearcats were up by 11 points, 36 – 25. Southern turned the game around in the 3rd quarter when they had their best quarter of the match adding 27 points while restricting the Bearcats to just 15 points to enter the last quarter with a slender 1 point advantage, 52 -51.  In the last quarter, little separated the two sides with the Tigers able to hold on and increase the final margin to 5 points (72 – 67). At the conclusion of the match the top three scorers for the Tigers in Robyn Jennings, Ashleigh Spencer and Madeline Cunningham combined for 56 points whereas the top three scorers for the Bearcats in Nikita-Lee Martin, Ashlea Vordermaier and Alice Gee gathered only 39 points.

Woodville Warriors v Eastern Mavericks, Sat, May 22nd, 6.30pm at St. Clair
In a major blow to the Warriors' chances of winning at home, Ingrid Richards (12.5ppg) and Katherine Perkas, who has played every game this year, were not available. Woodville were competitive early, trailing by only 4 points late in the first quarter but towards the end of the 2nd period the flood gates had opened with the visitors piling on 17 points to 2 to break the game open. After half time Eastern were never troubled, blowing out the final margin to 41 points (89 – 48). Tess Madgen finished with a double double of 35 points and 17 rebounds, and junior Alex Wilson compiled 17 points. Warriors guard April Brown, in only her third match for the season, finished with 9 points to be the team high scorer. On the night the Warriors team took more shots but Eastern's conversion rate at 52% was higher.

Norwood Flames v Forestville Eagles, Sat, May 22nd, 6.30pm at Mars
As predicted the battle between 3rd (Forestville) and 4th (Norwood) was a hotly contested affair. Little separated the two sides throughout the night with the Flames holding on to a slender 1 point margin at half time 33 – 32. Norwood's Rachel Herrick, Jess Foley and Rebecca Duke did the bulk of the damage and two 3s by Jess Hansberry halfway through the 2nd quarter did not help the Eagles' cause. In the 3rd, Mia Newley and Jessica Mahony along with Kelsey Ireland tried to wrest the lead away from the Flames but late in the quarter the margin remained steady just under double figures. Early baskets from the Eagles in the last quarter closed the margin to just 1 point with the locals in front 59 – 58 but late foul trouble saw the Flames ease away to win by 9 points 73-64, their last 12 points scored from the foul line without a miss. Jess Foley was the game high scorer with 24 points.

Sturt Sabres v North Adelaide Rockets, Sat, May 22nd, 6.30pm at Pasadena
The Sturt Sabres inflicted the fourth straight loss suffered by the Rockets in a nail biter where the last shot of the night decided the result. North Coach Mike McKay would be keen to swap the 20 point output from the third quarter with the last quarter when his team was held to just 4 points - a similar scenario to last week’s game when North Adelaide could only find 6 points in the final quarter in the loss to the Bearcats. The Sabres were in trouble early, losing the first three quarters, the Rockets holding an 8 point advantage at the end of the third (44 – 36). With a storming last quarter the Sabres prevailed, extending their winning streak to 9 games. Monique Bowley (Sabres) finished with a double double of 18 points and 15 rebounds. Jo Hill with 14 points for the Rockets was the only other player in double figures.

South Adelaide Panthers v Central Districts Lions, Sun, May 23rd, 1.45pm at Port Adelaide
As has been the trend in recent games for the Lions they were competitive early with only a couple of baskets separating the two sides in the first quarter. The Panthers opened strongly in the second quarter and by the midpoint of the quarter had begun to break away, although the Lions were within striking distance trailing 26 – 16. That margin was maintained until halftime with Sarah Peddle (South) damaging from outside. Both teams traded baskets in the 3rd quarter with the Panthers only able to extend the lead at ¾ time by a solitary basket (59 – 46). South moved further away in the last and by the end of the contest Centrals were hurt by having 3 players (Casey Banwell, Dayna Roberts and Amber Land) fouled out, with Land lost early in the last quarter after an offensive foul. A telling statistic was the 27 points that South scored from the free throw line.
