Men's Previews - Round 9

West Adelaide Bearcats v Southern Tigers Sat, May 22nd, 8.15pm at Port Adelaide
With the Bearcats holding down equal 2nd position it is hard to see the Tigers, who occupy 8th position, coming away with the points. West's win last round against the Rockets was all the more meritorious given that it was away from home and they had a slow start. Josh Bond was a standout for West with 20 points in that match and their ‘bigs' (Chris Molitor and Blake Truslove) combined for 28 points and 15 rebounds. Against Woodville only Tristan Braithwaite and Brandon Brine for the Tigers were in double figures. For Southern to secure an unexpected victory Shane Boal, Michael Florence and Mark Paget will need to get amongst the scorers as they have done a number of times in other games this season.

Woodville Warriors v Eastern Mavericks Sat, May 22nd, 8.15pm at St. Clair
In the away match Eastern are expected to be at full strength with Ben Madgen joining the team from Augusta State University in the US, where he has played since 2006. The Warriors halted their run of 6 losses by defeating the Southern Tigers last round doing the damage in the second and third quarters. Woodville's leading scorer for the season, Brady Brink, will need to produce a big score to offset Brad Hill (Mavs) who, in four matches this season, is averaging 26.8ppg and 10.3rpg. The match-up of the guards will be interesting with Cameron Wilson (Warriors) in good form handing out 10 assists last match, a rare statistic. How Eastern players adapt to St Clair may have a big bearing on the outcome.

Norwood Flames v Forestville Eagles Sat, May 22nd, 8.15pm at Mars
With both teams sitting on 6 wins and 2 losses it is difficult to separate the two sides. The finals clashes between the two clubs over recent times have been memorable. Flames guard Andrew Webber had a major influence on both results with the 08 buzzer beater in the grand final and in 09 the three converted foul shots to force overtime in the prelim final. This year the Eagles front with scoring sensation Riley Luettgerodt (27.6ppg and 9.4rpg) and have registered Harri Harvey, returning after a year in the US. The impact he might have on the outcome is unknown, but the contest should provide another close encounter.

Sturt Sabres v North Adelaide Rockets Sat, May 22nd, 6.30pm at Pasadena
North Coach Tracy York will be looking to inflict only the second loss on the Sabres this season to interrupt their 6 game winning run. For the Rockets, it has been an up and down season so far winning their first 3 games then dropping 3 of the last 5 matches.  On the other hand Sturt will be keen to keep their winning streak going with the imminent loss of Nathan Spehr, John Marriott and Josh Owen-Thomas to their overseas commitments in June. For North, the recruitment of Pero Vasilijevic who finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds in his first game will help combat the rebounding strength of a Sabres team led by Jacob Holmes who is averaging 14 rebounds per game. How North handle the Sabres shooters on the night will be the key, but Sturt will start favourites in this game.

South Adelaide Panthers v Central Districts Sun, May 23rd, 3.30pm at Port Adelaide
With only 10 minor round games remaining both clubs will be desperate for victory - a finals berth almost out of reach for either team if they suffer a loss. Both teams enter the contest coming off their biggest loss of the season last round, Centrals losing to the Sabres by 38 points and South falling by 29 points to the Eagles. The Lions will be looking for a lift from Wade Pidock and for Zane Reeves to repeat his round 7 performance in which he scored 35 points. Lachlan Parker and Matthew Clarke are also capable of posting big scores. South has relied on Sammy Gazzo to do the bulk of the scoring but Steve Pilkington, Tom McKenzie, Adam Blight and Lachlan Parker are capable of producing good numbers. Will it be the input of Gazzo, Reeves or Pidock that decides the outcome of the game?
