INFORMATION
DARWIN
Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory and is the northern most capital city in Australia. Darwin is a cosmopolitan city with a population of around 110,000. There are many attractions in and around the city to keep the visitor occupied. In addition, for the more adventurous, the famous Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks are just a few hours drive.
The Regatta will be hosted by the Darwin Sailing Club situated on the Darwin Harbour, approximately five minutes from the city centre. The Club is renowned amongst the cruising and yachting fraternities as being equal to any of the worlds best yacht clubs. The Club provides members and guests with first class facilities that includes waterfront bistro, bar facilities, secure boat storage and ample car parking. The relaxing, friendly atmosphere, warm tropical breezes and the fiery sunset may be savoured all year round.
The Regatta will be sailed in the warm tropical waters of Fannie Bay where the conditions are usually benign. The wind conditions in May range from 5 to 16 km/h and temperatures average around 32oC.
ARAFURA GAMES
5000 PARTICIPANTS 25 COUNTRIES 30 SPORTS
Darwin, in Australia's Northern Territory, will host the 9th biennial Arafura Games from 12 - 19 May 2007.
The Games began in 1991 with 1500 participants from 7 countries in 13 sports. The 2005 Games saw 5000 participants from 25 countries in 30 sports travel to Darwin. Organisers are now planning for the Arafura Games 2007. Teams from the Asia-Pacific and, increasingly beyond, will compete vigorously against teams from Northern Australia and representation from other Australian states. The Arafura Games have become known as an ideal springboard for you, the up-and coming athletes - the athletes of tomorrow. Many use the Arafura Games as a natural lead-up to the South East Asian and South Pacific Games.
Sailing was included as a sport in the Arafura Games for the first time in 1999 and was contested in the Tasar and Laser (full rig and radial) Classes. In 2007 the Laser, Optimist and RS:X Sail Board are the selected classes to be sailed. In May the Northern Territory's constant, dry climate and warm seas presents unparalleled competition and sailing opportunities.
Sailing facilities at the Darwin Sailing Club are of international standard, and the management has a wealth of experience in hosting many national and international events.
The Arafura Games isn't only about sport and competition, but 'next door neighbours' getting together and sharing ideas, conversation and culture. So be a sporting neighbour and come to 2007 Arafura Games.
TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION
Darwin is situated in the Northern Territory of Australia and is serviced by air, road, rail and sea. Daily scheduled flights operate from every mainland Australian capital city. As the closest Australian capital city to Asia, Darwin has regular international air services from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Excellent sealed highways in the Territory such as the Stuart Highway (sealed all the way from Adelaide), the Barkley highway from Queensland and the Victoria Highway from Western Australia, all provide ease of access to Darwin. Darwin also boasts an International shipping port with both container and roll-on roll-off facilities and a regular rail service from Adelaide linking Darwin to the national rail network.
Competitors can take advantage of special travel arrangements organised by the many countries sending teams to compete in the various sports of the Games. Competitors will also have the advantage of ambassador greeting at the airport, free shuttle buses to and from the airport and free transport between accommodation and sporting venues.
It is expected that some billeting will be available in close proximity to the Darwin Sailing Club. In particular, any junior competitors who will be unaccompanied should enquire.
