Event Details
The best of the Asia Pacific's judo competitors will head to Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, from 12-19 May 2007 for the judo competition, which will be held over three days, At air-conditioned Marrara Indoor Stadium . Australian Judo players will compete for national points, and the competition will be a round robin format, so all players will receive maximum mat time.
Pascal Giraud will be conducting Judo training sessions after the competition. This is a great opportunity for Coaches and athletes to learn new skills. A coaching conference and seminar series is held in conjunction with the games, details are elswhere on the website.
Arafura Games 2007 will not only provide a pathway for the future champion judo athletes, it will give visiting teams the chance to have a look around the Territory's wonderful Top End - an area best known for its world famous icons such as Kakadu National Park and Katherine Gorge. Both attractions (and plenty of others) are only a few hours drive from the Territory's capital. Although there will be a packed sporting program in the week of the Arafura Games, it is definitely worth making the time to explore Darwin and its surrounds.
Even if you don't have time to `go bush' and explore Australia's outback, the games host city Darwin is a vibrant, multicultural city, well known for its casual lifestyle, its fondness for sporting and outdoor recreational activities, and year-round warm weather that is the envy of the rest of Australia.
Judo became an official Arafura Games sport for the first time in 2001 and attracted in excess of 50 players from most Australian states, PNG, New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
In 2007, the judo competition will be open to both male and females in senior (Seinan) and Under 16 (Shonen) IJF weight divisions. Gi's (Judo suits) in blue or white must be worn for senior divisions. The minimum grade for senior division is `San Kyu' (Senior Green). Shonen 1st Kyu will be permitted to enter all seinan (senior) divisions. The junior division is open to athletes between 13 and 16 years of age with a minimum grade of `San Kyu'.

The Judo competition will be held at Marrara Indoor Stadium with it's sprung floor, will provide an excellent venue for the competition.
