SUNS SET TO SPICE IT UP

The Sherbrooke Suns are happy to announce they have lured 2015 YL2M All Star Five and Championship winner Nick Spicer from Division One outfit Warrandyte for season 2018.

Spicer 25, is a former Kilsyth Junior, entering his fifth season in the BIG V after spending 2014 and 2015 in the Youth League system at Warrandyte, before graduating to their Senior Men’s program for 2016 and 2017.

In 2015, he had a breakout year averaging 11.2 points at 43.5%, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game during the season, leading Warrandyte to an 18-2 record, and ultimately a championship against Mornington which was sealed with league All Star 5 honours.

On the back of the Championship in 2015, the then 23-year old made the jump to the Division One roster but couldn’t crack the rotation, featuring in just six games for the year before earning 113 mins in his 16 appearances in 2017 where he connected on 13-25 three-point attempts but sought a fresh opportunity.

“It was pretty disappointing, coming off the Youth League Championship and All-Star 5 selection, I thought I’d get more of a chance to show my abilities at the next level but it just didn’t pan out that way.”

With a theme of bringing in guys seeking fresh or increased opportunity for 2018, new Sherbrooke Coach, Ryan Rogers believes Spicer has the tools to recapture his 2015 form in fresh colours.

“I definitely rate Nick as a guy who can put points on the board, but with confidence and continuity believe he is also capable to expand his game and take on greater responsibility with some defensive assignments.”

“I see him being a major contributor to our group. He puts a level of expectation on himself and providing he stays positive his competitive edge could be a real difference maker having tasted success previously.”

Spicer joins Division One counterparts Eric Miraflores and Paul Nikoloff-King as the initial new additions for the Suns in their 2018 roster rebuild, which excites Spicer looking to reinvigorate his career.

“It’s been a friendly atmosphere with a great bunch of guys. Everyone is here to prove something, so it’s good to have that competitive nature and push each other to be better. With a few of the other additions to the team we aim to make the playoffs and from there it’s anyone’s game,” he said
