The Wide Bay rep side played against Darling Downs on Sunday the 15th February at ATW.
Whilst the boys had a win (10.4 - 6.7), it was more important to give every one an opportunity to show what they are capable of and how far they have come from the previous year. Our guys efforts were fantastic on a hot muggy day and really proud that they have taken things on board over summer and shown some progress. The selection of the next level team, Country South, is made up of Darling Downs, Wide Bay and half of Capricornia. It was our hope to get at least six or seven in the side, so to currently have nine in the side with one still a chance to be added was fantastic.
The names of the guys that have made the squad are: Hayden Thick, Billy Moorehead, Jake Goldsmith, Ryan Dempsey (Brothers), Brad Wex, Ben O'brien (Maryborough) Nathan Woodforde (Power) Ben Higgins, Jimmy Power (ATW).
All clubs have a representive in the side except for the Bombers, and that was only unfortunate that they didn't get a rep (another story).
There was also four underage players that played on the day (Jake Nagy, Nick Williams (Bombers), Patrick Power (ATW) and Jock Oats (Brothers)) and based on their efforts it was possibly only the age criteria that kept them out of the side.
The players will leave for Rocky on Friday and compete in two games on Saturday. They will also complete their testing and from that a Country Kookaburra's squad will be selected. Depending on the strength of other sides, I would expect that we will exceed last years tally of three in the side. I will be coaching the side so I look forward to seeing how the guys react to the pressure and opportunities that the weekend supplies.
Thank you to the following for their efforts on the weekend
÷ ATW for the hosting of the day, especially with the stresses of the weather
÷ Terry Webb for strapping the boys
÷ Bender and Maryborough for being available to switch the game at the last minute and supplying the guernseys.
÷ Geoff Ebert for putting his time aside yet again and working with the young players over summer
÷ Peter Higgins, Terry Goldsmith and the young water boys
÷ The umpires who donated their time
÷ Anyone else that I may have been remiss in not mentioning
