The U13 game started the day and according to many onlookers, was one of the best games in that age group that they had seen in Wide Bay. A very physical game with some quick moving football entertained the crowd as the rookie team snuck across the line in a 7 point nail biter! The 15s were out next and with the weather getting warmer, some players fitness was tested to the limits. A first half lead to the rookies was destroyed in the first 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter as the registered hit back hard. The trading of goals continued to the end of the game and a late score seen the rookies again sneak in, by 5 points. The 17s played next, and kept the standard high with counter attacks stretching both sides. The registered boys were not letting this one slip and kept a 2 goal margin through to the final siren.
Brisbane Lions Academy coach, Geoff Ebert, was impressed by the talent on display. “ It was great to see the boys really pushing themselves and challenging each other throughout the games. It was impressive to see the talent unearthed particularly through the schools program. A number of the new boys brought a physical approach to the games but their decision making and vision was also very good.”
Wide Bay Development Manager Rob Searle said the talent runs pretty deep. “If we can get the boys together again for next years rep programs, the teams will be very hard to beat”. “There was players from not only the three major centres, but also Childers, Gayndah, Mundubbera and Monto which was pleasing”
A Wide Bay Tigers Academy is being looked at for a start in the new year and initial lists are being formed for the first intake.
