REPORT
The wide bay rep side this year was very undermanned and disorganised, but due to those glaring facts the guys who did go performed admirably.
On Saturday we played Mackay, and with a squad of only 19,and I expected the worst.
We picked up two Rocky boys who happened to be brothers and they pulled on the boots to help us out.The 1st quarter saw Mackay come out full of run and put 4 goals on the board before our boys got used to the speed of rep footy. We consolidated and found ourselves able to match it with the Mackay boys.Dean Backwell,Michael Liverton and Mick Blair started to run the ball out of the middle with decisive ruck work by Braden Krebs,we then hit targets up forward with Pat Jenner being the most damaging and Jordan Darlington taking some good grabs.
Our back line repelled many a thrust by Mackay with Tim Risley,K Perry and Nick Clarry linking up well. The quick start by Mackay reflected in the score at full time, where we managed to go goal for goal for the last 3 quarters.
Best players D Backwell,M Liverton, M Blair,P Jenner. Final score Mackay 12.14 Wide Bay 6.12 P Jenner 4.
Sunday saw us play the host side Rockhampton on Sunday morning with our boys confused about the curfew that was imposed,11pm was the time but some thought it was am.But never the less we seem to play a lot better on Sunday.we had 2 injuries from the day before,Corey Goldie and Keedon Nelson were gone for the the day after trying to make it.
Rocky came out hard in the early stages and we were unable to stop their push into the forward line.Their Full Forward kicked 8 majors with some good delivery, and it was when Krebbsy went into the back lines were we able to stop him.Cam Baker won his share of the knocks and good support provided by Livo and Deano.Pat Jenner again made the most of his opportunities kicking 3 goals. Final score Rocky 20.19 Wide Bay 5.3.
Best players, M Liverton,D Backwell,Cam Backer and P Jenner..
Thanks to Kathy Partridge our medical support who done a great job looking after the sore bodys.
I was proud of the boys in the way that they approached the challenge and Dean Backwell as Captain led by example.
Michael Liverton won the wide bay medal as our best for the 2 days.
