Year 5 children from all over the South Burnett enjoyed a special Fun Day at Cherbourg State School last Friday.
Organised by the Active South Burnett committee, the day consisted of 17 different sports and encouraged the students to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. Schools which participated included students from Cherbourg, Cloyna, Goomeri, Kingaroy, Kumbia, Moffatdale, St Joseph’s Murgon, Taabinga, Wheatlands, Yarraman, Wondai and South Burnett Catholic College.
“It was great to see so many kids from the region come together and experience a large variety of different activities” Active-after school communities regional coordinator for the South Burnett, Jay Whelow said. “The event launched our involvement in Cherbourg and it was good for kids from all over the South Burnett to sample Indigenous culture through their involvement in one of the activities we organised; Indigenous games.”
AFL proved to be a popular option for students with students who rotated through activities run by Darling Downs AFL development staff having a blast competing in a footy tricks competition, learning how to drop punt kick the football and attempting to master the handball in a game of ‘Mr Sleepyhead’.
With the Kingaroy/Nanango Jets being the South Burnett’s local AFL club it is hoped that students who enjoyed participating will try their hand at playing football next season for the Jets in the local AFL competition. The aim of the day was to provide kids with a pathway to a sporting club. “These sort of initiatives don’t do any harm in terms of sport membership in the South Burnett,” Mr Whelow said. “If just a handful of children (out of the 400 who attended on the day) sign up to a local club, then we’ll be pleased.
