Schools from across the Lowood area converged recently on the Lockrose School to participate in a small schools sports expo. Grades 4 to 7 from Lockrose, Claredon, Mt Tarampa, Patrick Estate, Prenzlau, Minden and Tarampa enjoyed an afternoon of sports which was organised for them. Lockrose principal, Steve Hallahan, said the aim of the day was to expose the children to a variety of sports and to help them improve their skills. During the day the children focused mainly on AFL, netball, softball and hockey. Although these were the four sports focussed on, Mr Hallahan said the basic skills which are obtained through these sports could be applied to most other sports.
AFLQ Darling Downs development staff were present on the day with the team thrilled with the high turnout of children and their enthusiasm to take part in AFL based skill activities. With this interest in the sport across the Laidley and Lowood areas the DD AFL staff will now be turning their attention to becoming more involved in the area’s schools with school AFL specific PE lessons and future sports fun days being already being discussed and planned.
About 220 kids were present on the day with 8 instructors demonstrating and helping them learn to focus on their development of skills. Mr Hallahan said that most of these schools had received federal funding for drought assistance and as a result were able to use some of this money to pay for transport for the day. Another day similar to this will be run again later in the year. As well as learning invaluable skills from the instructors, the children were also given a chance to work and make new friends from other schools
