The Whitsunday Sea-Eagles proved their premiership credentials for the 2009 Manpower AFL Mackay competition, with a convincing 10 goal win in the top of the table clash with the Bakers Creek Tigers at Airlie Beach on Saturday night.
The Sea-Eagles came out of the rooms firing, grabbing first use of the football through excellent ruck work from Dave Marks, tipping off to the evergreen Darren Boase. The football rarely left the Whitsunday attacking half, leaving the Tigers shell-shocked into the first break. Mark Pollard featured heavily in front of goal, posting three of his four goals for the match in the quarter.
The game tightened up in the second quarter, with Bakers Creek running with the wind putting plenty of pressure on the Sea-Eagles backline of James McKenzie, Dave Ada and Dylan Lambert, who were solid as a rock for most of the night. This combined with some good runs out of half-back by Matt Grant and some booming disposals downfield by Brendan McGrath, left the visitors with few options to attack.
Xavier Smith had the X-factor for Bakers Creek in the goal square, muscling his way to the front to snatch some clean grabs to set up three of his fie goals for the match in the second quarter. With the scoreboard well in Whitsundayâs favour showing a 35 point lead at the main break, and another raid expected by the Sea-Eagles with the wind in the third, the Tigers continued to show plenty of spirit for the remainder of the match.
Daniel Pollock operated well through the middle for Bakers Creek, along with John Macdonald who was kept busy tagging Keg Player of the Year frontrunner Paul Branchflower, shutting down the dynamic Whitsunday on-baller for much of the match.
With another scoring blitz in the third, the Sea-Eagles were home comfortable 60 point winners. Whitsunday 7.7, 10.9, 18.10, 18.14 (122) def Bakers Creek 2.1, 5.4, 7.4, 9.8 (62)

The Moranbah Bulldogs travelled to Rogers Oval on the weekend facing the prospect of playing an under-manned Eastern Swans outfit, due to the wedding of key attacking forward, Ivan Walker.
While the Swans controlled much of the possession throughout the first quarter, inaccuracy at goal loomed large, allowing the Bulldogs to go to the break two points up off some straight shooting by Bryan Fagan.
Heath Brown and Matt Sondergeld combined well to control the centre clearances for the Swans in the second quarter, assisted by first touch of the football by Ryan Usher in the ruck, but could not penetrate deeply into the Moranbah defences, with Darren Boyd and Andrew Robson repelling strongly. Moranbah just 9 points behind at the main break.
The third quarter turned into an arm wrestle, with each team grinding it out in defence in a low scoring contest. Swans ahead by just 4 points at three quarter time.
The game opened up again in the last, with Brett Hoare delivering on to Dave Edwards, who booted two of his four goals for the match. Moranbah continued to battle on grimly, by eventually slipped to a 27 point deficit at full time. Eastern Swans Eastern Swans 3.4, 4.9, 5.11, 10.16 (76) def Moranbah 4.0, 4.0, 6.1, 8.1 (49)
SAINTS REMAIN GWYNNE-LESS
North Mackay Saints coach Darren Gwynne was a notable absence in last weekendâs 88 point loss to the Mackay City Hawks at Harrup Park, as the reigning premiers lurch to their third straight loss to remain at the bottom of the 2009 premiership ladder.
The Hawks were on song with the boot, amassing 24 goals with only 7 behinds for the match, assisted once again by Grant Evans with his six for the match taking him to 19 goals for the season atop the Matheson Plastering Leading Goal Kicker Tally.
Dominating from the first bounce, Mackay Cityâs Ashley Jones and Mitch Stansborough controlled the match through the middle, feeding on to Shane Davis and Des Haynes to break the back of the Saints defences.
Ben Alexopoulus typified the future talent that the Hawks have developed in their younger ranks, showing a skilful set of hands and rewarded with a goal for his troubles.
The only glimmer of hope for the Saints was the trusty foot of Craig Dowdell, kicking three for the match, along with Carl Teske who also chimed in with a trio of goals.
By the main break, the lead had stretched to eight goals. With cracks beginning to show in the once invincible Saints, the flood gates opened in the last with a nine goal blitz by the Hawks to seal the victory. Mackay City 5. 0, 11.1, 15.3, 24.7 (151) def North Mackay 1. 4, 3.5, 6.8, 9.9 (63)
