Noel Lang came to Mackay Magpies through his son who took up the sport. However they're long gone and now he is president of the club, a role Lang loves and volunteers to do.
"My son was looking for some sport and through that I got involved in that too," he said.
"I started as a helper, then a coach and then I was on the committee and I just stayed with it, now I'm the president and my son doesn't play anymore.
"I've been president for three years, and I was vice president for two before that. I was on the committee for six years before that."
Lang said the Magpies were the infant club of Mackay Australian football so it was good to be involved in helping build and establish the club.
"For us we've got all of the venues and all of the gear, it's a bit of a challenge," he said.
"I like to try and put something back into the community, and I like working with good people."
Lang said "volunteers were the backbone of any club".
"Every... volunteer puts in exorbitant amounts of hours on top of their own working hours, without volunteers in community groups, community groups wouldn't exist," he said.
Besides volunteering with Magpies, Lang volunteers with the Road Accident Action Group, and referees touch football.
