This week sees the AFL Mackay match of the Round as the clash between the ever improving Moranbah Bulldogs up against the league`s powerhouse side in the Mackay City Hawks, for a twilight game at Harrup Park, starting at 6.30PM.
Both teams have had a terrific start to the 2013 season, and although the Hawks are ahead on the ladder, courtesy of one more win, it is the Bulldogs everyone is talking about, from spectators and fans, to beaten opposition sides coming home from a trip to the kennel, with their tails between their legs, after a sound defeat at the hands of the Dogs.
This game has all the ingredients of a tremendous clash, and as it will be played under lights , it will be well worth getting to Harrup Park to witness the spectacle .
Hawks Coach Dave Johnston said that although their team will have quite a few missing this week with some citing work commitments, while three of their best in Nabako Stow, Aaron Wade and Jason Garrett ,who will be playing in a Nth Qld U25s rep game in Townsville, there are four other players also playing in this side and they are Sam Dunbar and Nathan Peters from the Saints, as well as Matthew Laskey and young Jacob Low from the Whitsunday Sea Eagles, good luck to all the boys, and we wish them all every success.
David did say that he has a fantastic group of players that respond well to his coaching, and as long as they all play what he described as Hawks Footy, that is hard at the ball for a full four quarters they should come away with the win, however he did stipulate that they never take the Bulldogs lightly as they, ( Moranbah ) are playing a very good brand of footy themselves this season, and you never can underestimate the Moranbah boys !
Dave did say that he was debuting three U18s this game and it is pleasing to see the boys take their first run on the big stage, and under lights, and with his side playing superior footy and being as fit as they are, he is hedging his bets for a win to the home side .
Moranbah Bulldogs coach Sebastian Curtis told me that he has had between 25 to 26 players to choose his side from and while that is pleasing, he was keener to point out that there are a core group of 16 that are the backbone of his side, and as there are quite a few new players in Bulldogs colours this season, the more they play together, the better they seem to be getting.
Sebastian also said that he is keen to see just where his side is in terms of the rest of the competition and that the Hawks are one of the league’s best yard sticks to measure his team by.
As long as his boys play for the full four quarters, Sebastian expects a very good showing from his charges and is quietly confident.
Other games this weekend sees the Northern Beaches Magpies at home to the Whitsunday Sea Eagles at the new oval at the Magpies Sporting Club complex, and the other game this weekend is the Eastern Swans who are also traveling well so far this season, up against the Bakers Creek Tigers, who despite the score lines are playing a good brand of footy.
This game is at Rogers Oval at 2.45PM…
See you at the footy !
