How the mighty fall. Former league front-runners Bakers Creek have spiralled out of the top four of the Manpower AFL Mackay Premiership, following a disappointing afternoon against the North Mackay Saints last weekend, who have snuck back onto the winners list.
Bakers Creek have the chance this weekend to return to the top four, when they travel out to Moranbah this weekend to take on the bottom placed Bulldogs. The injury ravaged Tigers will face a tough test for their finals aspirations when they meet a Bulldogs team with plenty of skill on the park, and itching to chalk up their first win for the season. In one of the most congested ladders in recent history, the Eastern Swans remain in second spot following their lacklustre performance against the yet to be defeated Whitsunday Sea-Eagles who sit five wins clear atop the premiership ladder.
Lurking behind the Swans on the ladder are the ever-present Mackay City Hawks, who can use this weekend to leapfrog the Swans into second place, and are seen to many as the only other viable contenders to the 2009 flag. The Swans have been Mackay City’s bogie team in recent matches, and will need to be on their best game this weekend. Hawks by 30.
The Whitsunday Sea-Eagles are flying high undefeated atop the ladder, and relish a win at Zeolla Park the home of their closest rivals of recent years, the North Mackay Saints. The Saints are cock-a-hoot with some good wins in recent weeks over Moranbah and Bakers Creek, but may be brought back to Earth against the Sea-Eagles.
Known as being a little erratic at goal, the already unstoppable Sea-Eagles continue to improve, and were impressive last weekend against the Swans where they kicked only twelve minor scores in their 33 goal win. The notable improvement was their decision making in front of goal, to look for options in better field position, and should feature again this weekend against the Saints. Sea-Eagles by 50.
