All six AFL Mackay teams will be hoping for a deluge of goals at this weekend's AFL Mackay 2008 pre-season carnival at Airlie Beach. The Whitsunday Sea-Eagles will be hosting the all-day carnival, starting at 11am.
The six local AFL clubs will be joined by three clubs from Townsville - the Thuringowa Bulldogs, Hermit Park Tigers and Curra Swans.
The nine clubs competing have this year been split into three pools of three, with the top team in each pool, plus the next closest team on points to go through to the finals to play for the coveted Mackay / Whitsunday Shield. It is currently held by Hermit Park, who last year defeated Thuringowa in an all Townsville final.
Pool 2 matches are shaping to be the highlight of the carnival, with last year's winners, Hermit Park taking on AFL Mackay premiers North Mackay.
With the ever-growing number of AFL supporters in the Mackay and Whitsundays region and the increase in junior participants, a huge crowd is expected to attend to get a taste of some live AFL action.
