Mackay Crows representative teams stamped the region as a powerhouse of women's AFL at recent State and North Queensland championships.
The seniors had a tough act to follow after the Under-17s Youth Girls team went through States undefeated.
In their first two games they knocked off Townsville and the Australian Defence Force's 3rd brigade. In their third and final game, the Crows came up against Cairns, which is rated as the benchmark of the regional competition outside of the Queensland Women's AFL in Brisbane.
Maddy Johnstone scored the goal in the second half to put the Crows in front. Cairns then missed a shot on goal, leaving a five-point deficit.
In the final 30 seconds of the game Cairns got a kick downfield and scored the goal that gave them a one-point win.
"That is football and unfortunately Cairns made the most of their opportunity,” coach Jeff Neumann said.
"To have been competitive and really push them is a credit to the players and the depth of talent we have in the region.
"It was definitely disappointing, other than the mateship that comes from team sports, winning is also a nice feeling.”
Neumann said every player impressed and played their role, from experienced captain Jennifer Revell, of Moranbah Bulldogs, to rookie Felicity Morris.
"The entire squad really invested and engaged in the program... which will assist in strengthening the local competition,” Neumann said.
"The biggest outcome we want is for players to pass on what they have learnt to their clubs to help develop their teams.”
