New lease on life for sporting clubs
BAKERS Creek Football Club and Mackay Junior Motocross Club have more security over their futures.
The two clubs were given long-term leases at their current locations at a Mackay Regional Council's corporate services committee meeting last month.
Committee chair Ross Walker said the lease at Bakers Creek was a long-term one.
"The club itself has expanded a lot, they now have ladies there, and I think their membership has doubled,” he said.
"We were more than happy to renew that and continue to support the Bakers Creek AFL club.”
Bakers Creek received a 10-year lease and the motocross club was given a five-year renewal.
Cr Walker said the location of the motocross club was a good place for the sport.
"There's definitely a lot of demand for it, it's a growing sport,” he said.
Cr Walker said he believed sport played a major role in the community and it was important to continue to support clubs.
"Anything we can do to help not-for-profit organisations, council is right behind it,” he said.
