Match of the Round
Swans Vs. Tigresses
Saturday 18th July, 11:10am Harrup Park
It may not have the hype of the top of the table clash at Magpies Sports Park but the Eastern Swans and Bakers Creek Tigresses encounter will play a major role in defining the makeup of the ladder.
The Swans currently sit third on the ladder on 32 points, just 4 points behind the second placed North Mackay Saints. For the Tigresses they currently sit fifth, equal on 20 points with the fourth placed Bulldogs.
With the Saints facing the Magpies in a match tipped heavily in the latter's favour, a win to the Swans will see the women in red and white soar in second place on the Premier Women's ladder with a far superior percentage than that of the Saints. However, if the Tigresses can come together and defeat the Swans they will pounce into the top four.
The Tigresses have had a tough run in their maiden season and still learning what it takes to compete at a consistent level.
Though the Tigresses sit at the bottom of the Premier Women's ladder, they are ranked 1st for their playing list depth and boast a number of stars that they will require to contribute heavily to this match. Forward Shannon Willett will be pivotal as well as Tyeller Masso, Clerisma Parry, Courtney Masso and Ebony Rix.
The Swans have their own in Alana McNabb, Madeline Johnstone, Jessica Healy, Adele Webb and Rebecca Grummitt.
With the game been played at the home of footy at Harrup Park, both sides will relish the opportunity to play on the big stage ahead of possible September appearances.
Magpies Vs. Saints
Saturday 18th July, 11:10am Magpies Sports Club
This match might not have the tag of match of the round but this encounter has been labelled as a possible Grand-Final preview with the Saints the closest contenders to the undefeated champs.
North Mackay are coming off an 8-goal loss to the Moranbah Bulldogs and will no doubt be ready to fire against the table topping Magpies. The Magpies are in autopilot, going through each match on cruise control and are coming off their biggest score in their short history after kicking 18.7 in Round 13.
Magpies Captain Adriana (AJ) Smith and midfielder Lisa Millard are the key contributors for the black and white and the Saints will need to negate their influence if they are to be the first team ever to defeat the Magpies.
Forward Tina Hancock kicked 10-goals last week for the Magpies and no doubt Saints Captain and full-back Lesley Gammie will be the ideal match up to nullify Hancock's contribution.
However, it isn't only the Saints that have to watch the Magpies, the Magpies will need to watch some of the Saints prime movers closely as well. Midfielder Rahnee Vaccaneo has been in superb form all season and the only Saint to play every match so far this season.
Allyce Marchetti is also in a purple patch, with Jenna Camilleri, Jenna Godfrey and Izabella Scholer have been the consistent contributors across the Saints season.
If the Saints can work out the blue print to test the Magpies defensive unit, which is like fort knox and lock the footy inside their forward fifty, they will give themselves the best opportunity to defeat the undefeated.
