In the Magpies' tough times, Jaebyn Drefke gave his all. The club captain now leads from the front for a side that isn't the easybeats it was last year.
On Saturday, Magpies consolidated fourth spot on the Allied Pickfords Cup with a 75-point win over Moranbah Bulldogs.
"It was good to put together a four-quarter performance," Drefke said.
"It wasn't always pretty football but we worked hard throughout."
The game was moved from Stevenson Sports Park and Drefke praised Moranbah for their performance.
"Credit to them for bringing in a good side, they battled hard all day," he said.
With the wind at their backs, the Magpies began stronger but the game was evenly poised at half-time with the black-and-whites ahead by 19. After the break, they weathered an early storm and forged ahead with a seven-goal term.
"We had some really good passages of play and when we had to do the tough stuff everyone in the side stood up," Drefke said.
The final score was Magpies 19.9.123 to Moranbah's 7.6.48.
Jake Fraser was rewarded for his hard work, kicking four majors. Nick Thiele was a rock at half-back and was the Magpies' best on ground.
Elsewhere, North Mackay Saints were too strong for Bakers Creek Tigers.
The Saints lead all day at Etwell Park and ran out winners 15.7.97 to 3.10.28. The Mackay City Hawks and Whitsunday Sea Eagles game was called off due to weather. The teams will likely split the points.
Eastern Swans remain on top of the ladder ahead of Hawks, Saints and Magpies.
