The Mackay Magpies have stunned the Whitsunday Sea Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Magpies Sports Park, running out 16.8 (104) to 5.8 (38) victors over the Airlie Beach based club.
It was a masterclass from the outset with the Magpies piling on 5-unanswered goals to the Sea Eagles 1-behind in the opening stanza. From the start Whitsunday were playing catch up and the Magpies were too classy on the inside and outside.
New recruit Jeff Neumann led the way for the black and white booting 3-majors in a best on ground performance from the South Toowoomba vice-captain.
Forward Brendan Edwards was again a key, booting 3 goals before falling to an ankle injury late in the match. The Thiele brothers along with Brandon Ross were the main destroyers for the Magpies across half-back, as Brent Gale and Matt Laskey were the standout performers for the defeated Sea Eagles.
Premiership favourites Eastern Swans and Mackay City Hawks also cruised to victory in their respective matches, with both sides scheduled to meet this weekend in a blockbuster match at Rogers Oval.
Swans young-gun Nick Kempe continued his goal-kicker form booting 8-majors to take his season tally to 23 after 4 matches. Simon Kiegrel continued his purple patch of form judged best on ground by the Eastern Swans coaching staff.
Mackay City Hawks have named Scott Brown best on ground in their big win over Bakers Creek, as Brodie Saltmarsh booted 5-majors.
