City coach David Edwards knew if his team could quell Country early on, they were a good chance of winning the representative clash.
“I told the boys that if we could weather the storm then I reckon we’d have too much run for them in the second half, that’s what I was banking on and it came to plan,” he said.
Despite Country being up by 11 points at quarter time, City ran out 84-point winners in the Anzac Day game.
“We were a bit rusty in the first quarter-and-a-half getting to know each other and then once we did I knew if we clicked we could put on a show and that’s what we did,” Edwards said.
It was a great night for Hawks player Jarrod Watling who won the Anzac Day medal for best on ground. This was Watling’s first representative game in Mackay and is his first season in the regional competition after arriving, moving to Mackay from Tasmania.
“It’s obviously a great honour... when you get things like this you really cherish them,” he said.
Edwards said Watling, who played as captain had a great game.
“It was one of the better individual games I’ve seen from a midfielder,” Edwards said.
Edwards said playing on Anzac Day was a special experience for players from both sides.
“I said to the team ‘one thing we know tonight is you’re going to be eating with your family or partners, whereas a lot didn’t 100 years ago to this day,’” he said.
