North Mackay player Matthew Rutland has led the Saints to victory in their round 3 Allied Pickford's Cup encounter with the Whitsunday Sea Eagles in Airlie Beach.
It was a low-scoring affair between the two sides with only 14-majors booted for the match.
Both sides went blow for blow in the first quarter, recording three goals a-piece in an entertaining opening term. North Mackay took a slender 1-point lead into the first break.
It was much the same in the second quarter with either side unable to get out into the open with both sides unable to penetrate the big sticks. With only 5-majors between the two sides it was an old fashion arm wrestle and Sea Eagles players James Bourke and Chris Bray led the way for the home side.
For the Saints Rutland and Brendan Cowcher were the two most damaging players for the visitors.
The third quarter saw Whitsunday only able to record one-major with the Saints booting two in another low-scoring term.
It was again the same story for the last quarter with both sides having plenty of the football but unable to make anything of their inside forward fifty entries. Whitsunday were able to record the 1-behind and the Saints recording two minor scores as well to run out 12-point victors.
Rutland and Cowcher were the two most damaging players, while Brendan Riddle and Sam Dunbar booted 3-goals each.
Saints youngster Bailey Manuel-Isaacs in only his second game was damaging and one of North Mackay’s best.
For the Whitsunday Sea Eagles, Bourke along with Bray were outstanding, along with young-gun Eli Gunders. In the end it was the Saints who held on and recorded their second win of the Allied Pickford’s Cup premiership season.
In the weekends other fixtures the two early premiership favourites the Eastern Swans and Mackay City Hawks flexed their muscles with big round 3 victories over Magpies Mackay and Moranbah Bulldogs.
