The reigning premiers will officially begin their defence of the 2015 Allied Pickford’s Cup title, as the Moranbah Bulldogs take on the Mackay Magpies at Magpies Sports Park in Glenella.
Last time these two sides met was in Round 12 last year where a 6-goal third quarter by the Bulldogs set up the 52-point victory. However, new coach Paul Gurry said the Magpies won’t be giving in and have recruited well over the off-season.
“All the people behind the club have been amazing over the off-season, few new recruits have added to our depth,” Magpies coach Gurry told Mackay.AFLQ.com.au
“Our on-ball brigade in Heath Thiele, Shaun Bridger and Jaebyn Drefke (captain) are up there with the best in the competition,” Gurry added.
“We have lost 4-key players after our round one match with Bakers Creek and I will be looking to top up with a few boys from the reserves (Division 2 Men’s),” said Gurry.
Moranbah will be fresh after a bye in round one, while the Magpies are coming off a hard fought 34-point loss to the much improved Bakers Creek.
It was the Magpies forward line that was unable to fire in the round one match and coach Paul Gurry expected his front six will have more cohesion this week.
“Our forward line needs to fire, if we are going to get over the premiers.”
“Brendan Edwards was fantastic at centre-half forward, we will make sure he has more support this time around,” Gurry said of his new look forward line.
The Allied Pickford’s Cup match of the round, first bounce will be at 2:45pm at the new and improved Magpies Sports Park.
