With the Queen’s Birthday weekend Bye done and dusted, my spies tell me there are a few teams eager to get back onto the park to play some footy, and none more so than the two featured teams this weekend, and that is the North Mackay Saints who will be at home hosting the Bakers Creek Tigers this Saturday afternoon at Zeolla Park.
It could be said that both teams have not enjoyed the best of starts this year, and are finding wins very hard to come by this season, with all teams at times struggling for players at times, these two clubs seem to be doing it tougher than most, however that has not dampened their enthusiasm with both teams having great spirit and at least enjoying a good time off the park at the various social functions, which I am told are very well attended and are often the stuff of legends and folklore.
However it is on the park where the business is done and this game has the earmarks of a good tussle between two side who at least on paper, look reasonably evenly matched.
The Tigers are a great bunch of lads and they enjoy quite a following with the families and the WAGs always making their presence felt via some very vocal support .
Senior Coach Shaun Williams told me that the boys are very enthusiastic trainers and although they have lost a couple of good players who have returned home to down south, his core group are always keen and he is proud of the fact that week in and week out ,his team give it all they have.
Shaun said that he will have a couple of players returning this week after having been out of the side for various reasons, and it has to be said that if spirit and positive attitude could be converted to premiership points, the Bakers Creek Tigers would certainly hover at the top of the ladder.
Meanwhile a spokesperson for the Saints club said this week that training has been good as usual, and the side is going into this match fully expecting to triumph, without taking the Tigers lightly, as a lot of credence is given to the Bakers Creek boys fighting spirit, and as we all know anything can happen on the day.
Although missing a couple of regular players the coach expects his team to be strong out of the middle and with the forwards doing some extra goal kicking practice this last week, a score line showing more goals than behinds, is the desired result.
A little bit of wet weather has not helped the ground conditions, however as has been quoted before by people at the club, they train on that surface so they are well versed in playing on it to their advantage.
Other games on this weekend are the clash between the Eastern Swans who travelling very well this season, up against the Whitsunday Sea Eagles at Rogers Oval, with the third game of this round being the Northern Beaches Magpies at home at the Magpies Sporting Complex, hosting the Moranbah Bulldogs, who have lost a couple of close ones this year, and are keen to regain some authority.
Let’s hope the weather holds for the resumption of hostilities, and I urge you to try to get to a local game and cheer them on, when the big men fly!
