LACHLAN Bulmer aspires to one day be as good as Brisbane Lions hard-running forward Daniel Rich.
The 12-year-old Swans centre is now on the right track to making his dream come true.
Mackay boys Bulmer, Jayde Mellross and Thomas Baulch will all head south at the end of this month after being selected for the Under-14 Kookaburras team at the weekend.
The boys will get the chance to compete with the state's best at the tournament, where the Kookaburras will take on Brisbane teams and other regional state teams.
Kookaburra scouts caught a glimpse of the boys' talent at the Under-14s North Queensland carnival at the weekend.
Lachlan has been playing football since he was about six years old.
"It will be really structured when we are down there," he said.
"We don't do much training, because all the kids are from different regions."
Lachlan plays in the same club as Jayde Mellross, while Thomas Baulch plays for the Hawks.
Mackay Under-14 coach Ian Bulmer said he was rapt three Mackay boys had been selected for the team.
"It was a great effort," he said.
"You really notice a difference in their playing when they return.
"It's the best thing for their development."
Despite Mackay being smack bang in the middle of rugby league heartland, Mr Bulmer said it wasn't a struggle to attract junior players.
"I think it's actually getting stronger here," he said.
"I think a lot of credit has to go to David Harding, and the work he does to get these boys going."
