On Saturday at Zeolla Park, North Mackay Saints played Eastern Swans in conditions that resembled a wintery country southern states football ground.
While the rain held off for the entirety of the game, the ground had been saturated by Mother Nature in the lead up.
Mackay footballers are very spoilt with the condition of the playing surfaces during football season – with the likes of Harrup Park and Etwell Park – but on Saturday it was great to see two sides slog it out in wet, muddy conditions.
While I enjoy the free flowing games that show the polished skills that are usually played in the tropical conditions of North Queensland – after playing football in wet, cold, miserable conditions in places like Warrnambool and Mount Gambier – it was a pleasant flash back, with all players having to have a real crack – while the skills of both teams still played a telling part in the game – the efforts and determination in the heavy conditions could not be questioned.
The football contest was a beauty – with the closeness of the result testimony to that – with Eastern Swans getting over the line by smallest of margins – 1 point!
