MACKAY GIRLS REPRESENT THE CAPRICORNIA REGION (photos attached from Daniel Skipper)
Recently six local Mackay girls made the long trip south to Brisbane to represent the Capricornia Region in AFL. Codie Jacob, Jordan Smyth, Abbi Johnson, Maddison Goode, Sharnee Rees, and Meghan Post played their first games of AFL to make the Mackay and Capricornia teams before heading to Brisbane for the Invitational State Carnival. Local player Cassandra Thompson also joined the Capricornia team from the Northern region to help strengthen the team. Despite the Capricornia team not winning a game the girls showed tremendous courage and enthusiasm whilst playing. As you can imagine the girls didn’t have much opportunity to train and gel with teammates from the other parts of Capricornia, including Rockhampton, Glenden, and Clermont with only two training sessions. This meant the girls had to learn the game and gel with the others whilst playing. The first game, against the reigning premiers, was a wash out but in every game that followed the girls improved upon their previous efforts. The final game against Darling Downs was proof of how far the girls had come with the team scoring the most they had over the whole weekend. The carnival finished with a closing ceremony and the announcement of the players who had played well enough to make the Queensland team. Mackay AFL is proud to congratulate Jordan Smyth who was named in the Queensland team in her first ever AFL carnival. Hannah Davidson was another Capricornia player to make the Queensland team. The Invitational carnival is on track to becoming a State Championship next year and the majority of the Capricornia team are eligible to play again next year. With the improvements made by our region over the past two years it is safe to say Capricornia will be a competitive force in the years to come.
