Round two of the Mackay AFL kicks off this afternoon with three games being played in Mackay today, with the only out of town team involved being the Moranbah Bulldogs, who play the Eastern Swans at Rogers Oval.
Today sees the Northern Beaches Magpies at home for the first game ever at their new perch, at the Magpies Sporting complex at Glenella, playing the Bakers Creek Tigers, and we wish both teams all the best, as it is the first game for this season for both teams, it will be interesting to see the final score as the Tigers have a few new recruits and if spirit is anything to go by they are winners, and the Magpies will want to start their 2013 campaign in strong fashion, especially at their new home ground.
The third game is the clash between perennial combatants the North Mackay Saints, who are up against the powerhouse club, in the Mackay City Hawks who have showed the other teams they mean business this year already with a total domination of last Year’s Grand final runners up, in the Whitsunday Sea Eagles, last weekend.
This game is at the home of the Saints, Zeolla Park.
With both teams showing some good form during the Airlie Beach Carnival a few weeks ago, the clash between the Swans and the Bulldogs is our featured match of the round.
The Moranbah Bulldogs played some inspired footy at Airlie Beach, and I am told they expect a big year and some good results from this season of AFL.
The Eastern Swans too had a good crack up at Airlie Beach running out eventual winners, and I am told they believe it is a good platform to launch their season from.
Bulldogs coach Sebastian Curtis told me they have been training well and that with a few new players into the line-up, and the luxury of a full squad to select from, he is confident of a very good showing against the Swans, and like most coaches expects that the drive will come from his very good midfield .
Sebastian also said that he believes rotations will play a big part in not only this game but the entire season.
Swans coach Brad McLaren said that their training had been patchy due to the inclement weather, and that work commitments have robbed his side of at least half a dozen regular players, but the fact that the rest of the team have a higher level of fitness that they have had before, this early in the season, means that despite the conditions evening out the two teams, his boys will have it in the legs to run the game out.
Brad said he expects a hard close game from the Moranbah boys.
