This Wednesday will mark the end of the 2012 Open AFL Secondary Schools SUNS Cup competition in Mackay. The Grand Final of the open boys and open girls competition will be showcased on Wednesday 7th November at Zeolla Park (Cutler Dr, Beaconsfield). Congratulations to the following schools who will compete in the 2012 Gold Coast SUNS Cup Grand Final. Please see the draw for the finals below:
Open Girls Grand Final: Whitsunday Anglican School vs. Pioneer State High School. Game commences at 3.50pm (4 x 10 min quarters on ¾ size field).
Open Boys Grand Final: St. Patrick’s College vs. Proserpine State High School. Game commences at 4.45pm (4 x 12 min quarters).
We encourage all members of the schools, clubs and wider Mackay community to come along and witness the incredible sporting talents that exist throughout the Mackay region. A BBQ and drinks will be available for purchase on the evening.
AFL Queensland aims to expand the opportunity for students in North Queensland to participate in school-based and development programs for males and females. We are seeking potential secondary schools to represent the Mackay/Whitsundays region at the North QLD Open Secondary Championships in Cairns for 2013. This excellent concept is held in alignment with the Gold Coast SUNS vs. Richmond AFL match at Cazalys Stadium on Saturday 13th July, 2013. The 3-day event leading up to the AFL match includes a Trade/University expo, exclusive entry into the AFL game with finalist playing in the curtain raiser match! The championships now includes a boys and girls division and is heavily subsidized by AFL Cape York and AFL Queensland. Please direct your expression of interest to myself or AFL Queensland Mackay Development Manager David Harding on 0420 980 519 or dharding@aflq.com.au.
On behalf of the team at AFL Queensland in Mackay, we would like to thank all schools, teachers and students for taking part in this year’s competition. Without the commitment of the teachers and students involved, it would not be possible to expand the game of AFL in North QLD. Any feedback and suggestions to allow us to improve the quality of the competition in the future would be greatly appreciated and can be sent to me via email.
Good luck to all teams competing in the Grand Final this week.
