After successful campaigns in the local interschool AFL competitions in their respective age groups, each team went on to beat the winning schools from Rockhampton and were rewarded trip by AFL Queensland, to compete in the inaugural Gold Coast SUNS Cup finals. Mercy College were up against premiere schools from Cairns (St Augustine’s) and the Gold Coast (Keebra Park). Alligator faced tough competition from Townsville (Annandale SS) and the Gold Coast (Marymount College).
The two Mackay schools put in an outstanding effort during the championships, with many players from other sporting backgrounds embracing the chance to play AFL and the excellent pathways available in the sport. The trip was the experience of a life time for students; with an early morning flight, stadium tour of Metricon Stadium, chance to play at the stadium grounds and opportunity to meet SUNS players including Karmichael Hunt, Zac Smith, David Swallow, Jared Brennan, Charlie Dixon and Harley Bennell.
Mercy College were particularly impressive, losing by 1 point to the highly rated St. Augustine’s and a gallant effort against Keebra Park, who won the overall championships. Alligator Creek put in a solid display, with only a handful of club players which is a fantastic sign for junior AFL in Mackay. Young 10 year old, Isaac Thomson was very impressive for Alligator although only new to the game this year. Wesley Johnson, Tom Quinn and Lachlan (need to confirm surname spelling) were rewarded with the chance to play in the Final Match, inside Metricon Stadium in front of a vocal crowd and Gold Coast SUNS talent scouts on hand.’
