For those of you that are unsure if there is a pathway for ladies in AFL have a look at the highlights package in the link at the bottom of this email.
I know that Dion and Penguin are working hard to develop womens footy in Mackay, this is just an example of why we as individuals, clubs and leagues should support this program.
We have several very talented young ladies with Hannah Hillman leading the way and some young girls around the 13 or 14 age group led by Cassie Thompson of the Whitsunday Sea Eagles, it would be something special to get a ladies competition up and running in Mackay to ensure that we give these young ladies every opportunity to stay involved in this great game of ours.
This is an extract from an email sent by Julia Price of AFL Queensland:
As you all were aware last week was Women’s Week/Round in the AFL.
In line with this 35 Women from the All-Australian team in 2011 and 10 Youth girls from the Under 18 All-Australian team came together for the week for a High Performance Academy where they did kicking analysis, nutrition sessions, specialist small & tall sessions, etc etc to improve their knowledge and skills in the game and enable them to play as role models for those back in their home states.
The girls were also able to play in a game at Visy Park at the conclusion of the camp and below is a link to some of the highlights.
Queensland had six players involved:
Katie Brennan Yeronga AFC
Jo Butland North Cairns AFC
Emma Zielke Morningside AFC
Megan Hunt BITS AFC
Emily Bates Yeronga AFC
Tayla Harris Zillmere AFC
Tayla Harris at 15 years of age was awarded the player of the match, an extraordinary achievement, one considering her age and secondly for anyone that knows of Aasta O’Connor, Tayla was rucking against her.
