The Mackay Crows finished off the U16 QLD Country Championships in promising fashion, with a win over the Townsville Eagles and Wide Bay on Saturday in Rockhampton.
The first day of competition was certainly a challenge for the Crows, with 4 games against Darling Downs, Cape York, Cairns and Wide Bay. Although it took some time to adjust to the speed and style of representative football, the Crows were the big improvers of the carnival with a strong effort against a traditionally strong Cairns squad and a 10 goal win over Wide Bay. The entire team were in great spirits following the win, with everyone contributing to finish off the first day on a positive note.
On Sunday, the boys started slowly against Capricornia and allowed them to get an early run on in which we could afford to do in the short 2 x 15 min game format. However, one of the most impressive displays of the carnival was the final match against Townsville, where the Crows lifted to another level of football, showing great team spirit and endeavour to finish with a convincing win.
A the conclusion of the carnival, the QLD Country Kookaburras squad was announced, with two Mackay Crows players selected to represent our region at the QLD State Championships in Zillmere this month. Congratulations to Gauge Hill and Jacob Lowe from the Whitsunday Sea Eagles, who both put in strong performances in the carnival in Rockhampton. The Crows coaching staff would like to recognise the consistant efforts of Matthew Hol (North Mackay Saints), Lachlan Anderson (Eastern Swans) and Max Manners (Whitsunday Sea Eagles). All three boys put in an exceptional effort across the 6 matches and were unlucky not to make the Country Kookaburras Team. Matthew Hol received the coaches award for the most consistent player of the carnival and will be one to watch for the future as he well and truly showed he can perform at the next level of football.
On behalf of the Mackay Crows coaching staff, we would like to thank the parents for their support during the carnival and training program. And of course to the players who conducted themselves exceptionally both on and off the field for the duration of the Carnival. It was a fantastic learning experience for all involved, and all players should be proud of their individual efforts and continual improvement throughout the championships.
All the best at club level football for the remainder of 2011.
