5 Mackay students are preparing to compete in this weekend's State under-16 championships in Cairns. They will be playing in the first ever Central Coast Cobras side, set to face the best young female AFL talent throughout Queensland.
The five girl's representing the Mackay Region include Kirsty Swindells, Sharon Horne, Hannah Hillman, Taylor Cowie and Rebecca Riddle. The squad has been preparing for the championships under the guidance of assistant coach and manager Kiah Lanham and Mackay AFL Development Manager David Harding.
"Hopefully by giving these girls opportunities like playing in state championships will boost interest in the sport. Then we might be able to have our own league next year," said Lanham.
Harding agreed and added, "Aussie Rules is the fastest growing female sport in Queensland - we want to capitalise on that.
The Central Coast Cobras will play against North Queensland, PNG, Gold Coast/Darling Downs and Cape Yorke. The Championships is held from 29th - 31st October at Watson's Oval, North Cairns AFC.
We wish the girls all the best for the upcoming championships.
