Mackay Crows Under 16’s
The Mackay Crows team were more than competitive at the under 16 Country Championships in Rockhampton on the weekend. They finished third with 4 wins 2 loses a very pleasing performance from an ever improving playing group the next 2 years in Mackay is certainly going to be an exciting one . 5 players were selected for the Kookaburra Under 16 team that goes onto the State championships in Brisbane in 2 weeks time. Players Selected were Nabako Stow, Tyler Jones, Bo Hall, Nathan Billingham and Brad Hehir. There were another 5 who could count themselves a little unlucky.
We started our campaign on Friday afternoon against the host region Capricornia and got away with a really solid fist up win. Saturday morning we were up against the 2 time champions the Crusaders in what was a very close tussle and very controversial game the Crusaders got away with a 3 goal win. Game 3 of the championships saw Mackay take on Darling downs and the boys really played well winning by 5 goals.3 down 3 to go and they were all to be played on Sunday. .
The final day saw the Crows play arch rival Townsville and with this probably played our best game .Played with a high intensity and a terrific brand of running football the boys came away with a very solid 5 goal win. Game 5 saw us pity against Bundaberg/Wide Bay and the boys did not disappoint coming away with a very pleasing 50 point win. The final game saw us pitted against the undefeated Cairns Lions for the Championship with the lions coming away with a very comfortable win.
AFL Queensland Regional Manager, David Harding, was very pleased with the overall result across the three days. “The weekend provided many of the boys with a good benchmark to measure themselves against when coming up against some talented opposition. They were very impressive at times and more than competitive for most part with all the boys better off for the experience with some areas where they can work on their game for the remainder of the club season.
The Mackay Crows coach’s award presented at the end of the Country Championships was awarded to Nabako stow who was no doubt the standout player of the carnival.
