CENTRAL QLD WINS UNDER18s AFL COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Central QLD wins under 18 AFL Country Championships at Rockhampton on the Weekend. Six Mackay players represented our Region in very wet and soggy conditions at Stenlake Oval on Saturday. Game one we were pitted against South QLD in a very physical and rugged encounter we came away with a solid12 point win. We then backed up in the next game against the highly fancied North QLD. The whole playing group was strong and committed in a highly entertaining game considering the atrocious conditions. We held on for a well deserved 5 point victory a very satisfying result for all players and staff concerned. Strong games from Mat Sondergeld (Eastern Swans) and Mathew Sturgeon (Rookie) a name to remember, earned both players a spot in the Kookaburras under 18 team which will head down to State Championships in Early March. Strong Games from Sam McCann (Eastern Swans), Brodie Tebutt, Josh Partridge (Whitsunday) and the ever improving young ruckman Hayden Lang (Andergrove). These four players will be back next year so a great experience which makes way for an even stronger representation next year. The future off AFL is looking a lot brighter in this region and hopefully within the next 6 months we will have an Elite Training centre up and running. This will give our juniors a clearer pathway and even stronger base to grow from.
Regards David Harding (Regional Manager)
