AFL Mackay Chairman Steve Johnson came good on a pre-finals pledge, gracing the streets of Mackay’s City Heart sporting a Borat Mankini.
The pledge was made during a radio interview on Mackay’s Hot FM in the lead up to the season decider, where Johnson declared he would walk Victoria Street in the sporty one-piece number, “If the Whitsunday Sea-Eagles did not win the 2009 Premiership”.
At that point, the Sea-Eagles were as yet undefeated, and considered certainties to take the flag. The Eastern Swans’ upset victory in last weekend’s AFL Mackay Grand Final was their first since 1998, and left many supporters wondering if Johnson would come good on his pledge.
Friday morning commuters were treated to a red-faced Johnson’s cheeky display, surrounded by a throng of players from AFL Mackay 2009 Premiers, the Eastern Swans who were only too happy to remind him of their success.
“It’s all about getting exposure”, a traffic stopping Johnson remarked, “While people are talking they are interested, and while they are interested they will hopefully go to watch our games, and if they go to games our clubs will benefit”.
