ROUND 9 TRENDS INTERIOR CARPET AND TILE COURT AFL CAPRICORNIA WRAP UP
Round 9 of the Trend Interior Carpet and Tile Court AFL Capricornia Premiership Season saw all 3 matches played in the Northern End of the Region. The top of the table clash between Glenmore and Yeppoon was hosted by the Swans at Swan Park with the Swans registering a hard fought 4 point win. In the other matches Panthers hosted BITS at the RCG and won by 64 points to move into third place while Brothers returned to the winners list against Gladstone at Kele Park by a hefty 10 goal margin.
Yeppoon Swans 11.13.79 defeated Glenmore Bulls 12.3.75 @ Swan Park
The top of the table clash between Yeppoon and Glenmore saw Yeppoon continue their winning form. In a match that promised to be tight and exciting both sides stuck true to the hopes as they went into quarter time all square with the Swans inaccurate kicking being there downfall kicking 2.7 for the quarter with the breeze while the Bulls kicked 3.1. The Bulls started the stronger in the second quarter with a sunburnt Shayne Finlando kicking true early to give the Bulls a 2 goal lead before some poor discipline saw the Bulls give 3 consecutive 50 meter penalties to allow the Swans to kick themselves back into the lead and take a 6 point lead into half time. The Bulls defenders lead by Greg Piggott continued to pressure the Yeppoon forward line but after a couple of errors late in the quarter resulted in Simon Price picking up a lose ball and kicking true the Swans continued to edge their nose in front of a hard running Bulls and continued to lead at three quarter time by a slender 2 point margin. The final quarter saw goals hard to come by and with Yeppoon holding onto the ball late in the last quarter and lead by the midfield (Hawke, Watkin, Wallin) they gave the Bulls limited opportunities to kick with the breeze and with a Russell Robertson like blunder by Nick Hills from the goal square the bulls failed to find a target as they blazed away late in the quarter. The Swans proved too strong and at times a little smarter as they ran out 4 point victors. Best players for the Swans were Hawke (2 goals), Wallin, Blanchard, Cam Watkin, Munro (2 goals) and Robertson while for the Bulls the best were Piggott, Mangan, Fowler (3 goals), Ramm, Imrie, Tyson Payne.
Panthers 19.7.121 defeated BITS Saints 9.3.57 @ RCG
The winner of this match would move a game clear ahead of the other into outright 3rd and as other results fell it would put them into a share of second place. Unfortunately for the Saints the form they showed against the Bulls the week before could only be put onto the park in the first half with the scores remaining deadlocked at halftime 6.2.38 a piece. In the second half a dominant Panthers team hit the park putting together great passages of play with some good finishing piling on 13 goals to the Saints 3 with BITS failing to kick a goal in the final quarter. Led by the experience of their midfield and some the superb kicking of Grant Guard (8 goals) up forward the Panthers proved far too much for a Boyne Island side who only had a few contributions throughout the day with Lucas Hall providing a nuisance up forward kicking 4 goals and Daniel Hunt continuing his good form with 2 goals. A positive sign for BITS was the return of Daniel ‘Daisy’ Boase who also managed to kick 2 goals for the match. The end result saw Panthers run out comfortable 64 point winners 19.7.121 to BITS 9.3.57. Best players for Panthers were Evans, Guard (8 goals), Kronk, Josh Roati (2 goals), Ryan and Clifford while for BITS the best were Bywaters, Rigney, Caveny, Hall (4 goals), Anderson and Boase.
Brothers Roo’s 19.9.123 defeated Gladstone Mudcrabs 9.9.63 @ Kele Park
It was a case of do or die for the Brethren at Kele Park and the Muddies would have been looking to halt their three game losing streak to gain back some momentum. The first quarter saw some good ball movement from both teams. But it was the Roo’s that were more effective across half forward which allowed them to gain valuable inside 50 possessions to go into the first break ten points ahead. The second term saw brothers take control of the game through the midfield and pile on seven goals to two in what was an impressive display. The third quarter saw more hard running from the brother’s midfield with the Muddies showing how hard it is to double up key players in today’s high paced football. The final term saw the game head back in the same direction as the first quarter with some improved efforts from some of the Muddies young brigade which saw them out score Brothers 5-5 to 3-1. Impressing once again for brothers up forward was Aiden Colbourne with 7 goals. While for the Muddies Dale Sparkman kicked 3.
Reserves
In the reserve grade this week we saw a return to form for the Brothers Roo’s as they registered there first win of the season thanks mainly to a Steve Smithwick inspired final quarter which saw him defy the years as he bounced and Spekied his way to help Brothers on to be 29 point winners. In other games straight kick was the difference between Yeppoon and Glenmore as the Swans went onto claim an 8.0.48 to 5.6.36 victory and in our final game BITS continued their undefeated streak for 2009 winning over Panthers at the RCG 11.10.76 to 11.6.72.
