Round 5 AFL Capricornia Trend Interiors Carpet and Tile Court Wrap Up
BITS Saints 16.8.104 defeated by Glenmore Bulls 16.15.111 @ BITS Country Club
This highly anticipated match between Glenmore and BITS promised to be a game full of fireworks and it didn't let down the hype. BITS were trying to salvage a win and put the memories of their previous weeks hiding by the Brethren behind them and Glenmore looking to consolidate their spot in the top 2. Glenmore travelled to BITS missing some key players but looked to have filled the void well. The first quarter saw a game which flowed from end to end with both midfield structures finding it hard to put dominance on the game. BITS went into quarter time 4 points clear after some good work by Lucas Hall up forward and a freak goal by Jacob Mills from the boundary. Spirits of both teams were high after an even first quarter and Glenmore came out in the second quarter taking it to BITS and were able to set their play up through some very strong midfield battles. Glenmore's backline gelled together well and were able to rebound many forward pushed by the Saints and should have gone into half time further ahead had it not been for some poor kicking from their forwards allowing BITS to only be down by 2 goals at the half and gave them a big sniff at victory. The third quarter showed some worrying signs for the Bulls as a less than impressive outfit hit the field. BITS dominated all over the ground and some very good ball delivery from the Saints midfield and half forward line (Shipard, Murphy, Beale, Dickenson) saw the Saints full forward line reap the benefits and keep the Bulls backline on their toes all quarter. A couple of late goals from the Bulls kept the game close but the Saints took a useful 2 goal lead into the final change. BITS continued the dominance in the midfield early in the 4th term and were able to push the ball forward quickly. A little bit of luck and some brilliant finishing from Shipard and Hunt saw BITS pull 25 points clear with less than 10 minutes to go in the quarter. The injection of Jenkinson onto the ball for Glenmore and some brilliant ruck work from Hills saw Glenmore turn the game on its head. Glenmore had to throw chance at the wind and the risky play compounded with some poor discipline from the Saints saw Glenmore rush in 6 unanswered goals and steal the game by 7 points. The final score reading Glenmore 16.15.111 defeating BITS 16.8.104. Best Players for BITS were Lucas Hall who kicked 6 goals, Brad Sims and Adam Dickenson while for the Bulls Cameron Imrie (3 goals) Derek Mangan (4 goals) and Shayne Finland were in the best. While the return of Ben Tickner brought some excitement to the side.
Gladstone Mudcrabs 10.13.73 defeated by Yeppoon Swans 12.12.84 @ Clinton Park
The second game of the round saw a high flying Yeppoon make the trip to Clinton Park looking to defeat the Muddies and wrap up a clean sweep for the first round of fixtures. Although missing Captain Wes Hawke the Swans ran away with the contest in the first quarter to be up by 21 points at the first break. The Muddies come out firing in the second quarter and helped stem the bleeding of goals by kicking four goals to two and be down by eight points at half time. As they have done all year the Swans midfield stepped up in the third quarter and with the likes of Cameron Watkin and Matt Wallin getting their hands on the football the Muddies had their work cut out. The Swans continued to build their dominance around the ruck contests and were able to kick away to a useful 24 point lead at three quarter time. The last quarter provided a glimpse of hope for the Muddies as they were kicking to the scoring end but with time running short could only manage three goals to Yeppoon's two for the quarter and allowed the Swans to run out 11 point winners to sit top of the AFL Capricornia Trend Interiors Carpet and Tile Court ladder, one game clear of Glenmore and keep Gladstone fighting with Brothers and Panthers in the quest for a top four position. Best Players for Yeppoon were Cam Watkin (3 goals), Matt Wallin, Gough Greer and Brad Palma while for Gladstone Chirgwin and Travers both did their part kicking two goals for the home side.
Panthers 13.11.89 defeated Brothers 11.9.75 @ Rockhampton Cricket Ground
The seniors was seen to be a must win from both sides with Panthers going into the game with not a win to date this year and Brothers with one win the week before desperate to grab another. There was defiantly no love loss between the two sides with an instant tension around the ground. The first three quarters there was not much to fault either side, but with five costly points to Brothers in the last quarter with not converting their opportunities over Panthers who held on to win by 14 points. Best players for Brothers were Cam Adam, Adam Williams, Scott Smithwick and with a handy little rocket Aiden Colbourne kicking four goals. Best players for Panthers were Dunnett, Mcaleese and Clifford. With Dunnett, Bretherton and Guard kicking a treble.
In the reserves we saw a dominant display from Panthers defeating Brothers by 15 goals, 16.16.112 lt 3.3.21 with Mackay and Hellyer kicking 4 goals, BITS Saints outplayed a weakened Glenmore outfit 10.9.69 lt 4.2.26 and the Swans getting up thanks to a great forward display from Humphries (7 goals) over the Muddies by 4 kicks 13.7.85 def 9.6.60.
