Trend Interiors Carpet and Tile Court Round 2 Wrap Up
Panthers 12.5.77 defeated by Glenmore 11.12.78 @ RCG
Last weekend saw the return to night footy for the AFL Capricornia Trend Interior Carpet and Tile Court Competition. With the lights burning bright both Panthers and Glenmore showed up and played a game that will be remembered for many a year to come and has clearly opened up the debate for a more permanent return to night footy. The game was played in good spirits and was a very physical contest with Panthers taking a very handy 9 point lead into the first break. Aided by some very brilliant in close football by their midfield in Clifford, Britt, Ryan and Sutton Panthers slowly clawed the lead further out before a late surge by the Bulls brought the margin back to within 3 goals at the main break. After the main break and a few words from the Bulls coaching staff Glenmore got themselves back involved with their physical presence around the ball which allowed their players to back themselves and use their run and without realising Glenmore were back within a goal of the lead. Panthers not to be undone kicked some handy late goals to keep the margin at 8 points in their favour at the final change. Going into the last quarter a couple of coaching changes saw a swing in momentum and it became evident that Glenmore just had a little bit more run in their legs and responded better to the physical clashes and held on well to claw out a one point win with the final behind being registered within the last minute of the game, with the end score being Glenmore 11.12.78 def Panthers 12.5.77. Best players for Panthers were Sutton, Clifford, Ryan and Neason with Kaufman bagging 5 goals while for Glenmore best players were Heath, Jenkinson, Darcy Payne and Turner with Darcy Payne and Heath key contributors with 3 goals a piece
Gladstone 12.13.85 def Brothers 10.7.67 @ Clinton Park
In the game between Brothers and Gladstone we saw a return to form for the Muddies against an under strength Roo's outfit. After a brilliant start to the game by Brothers which saw them open up a useful 3 goal lead at the first break, the Muddies responded well in the second term but wasted many chances to still be down by 12 points. After the main break Brothers failed to use the wind to their advantage with Gladstone being able to assert themselves around the footy with some good hardball gets and some smart play to open up the field and allow their runners to use the footy to their teams best advantage. The muddies through some hard work and a drop in work rate from Brothers ran in 5 goals for the quarter all be it to the none scoring end to go into 3 quarter time four points up. This would prove fatal to Brothers cause with the Muddies continuing the trend in the final quarter to run out 3 goal winners to kick start their season and leave the Roo's reeling at 0-2. The final score being Gladstone 12.13.85 def Brothers 10.7.67. Some positives to come out of the game for Brother's was the contributions of young players Logan Thornborrow and Ashley Walkingshaw who will keep many sides on their toes in the future. Best players for the Muddies were Stanley, Saddlier, Travers and Jephson who kicked 4 goals for the game. Maloney finished with 3 goals for Brothers.
Yeppoon 14.18.102 def BITS 8.11.59 @ Swan Park
In what many consider the first upset of the season a very proud Swans outfit showed the AFL Capricornia league that they are one of the contenders for this year's flag with a commanding display against an undermanned yet useful BITS Saints. The Swans came out firing in the first quarter and left both the BITS side and their fans shell shocked to see their side trailing by 21 points at the first break. To prove the first quarter was no fluke the Swans never looked back and continued the dominance around all areas of the field to win every quarter of the game and run out 43 point winners to see themselves sitting on top of the AFL Capricornia ladder above Glenmore on percentage. The final result being Yeppoon 14.18.102 def BITS 8.11.59. The impressive sign for the Swans is that a number of their best players are not overly experienced in senior footy (Higgins, Watkin brothers, Nicholls and Bibby) while a few old heads showed their worth with Hawke kicking 4 for the second week running on the other side of things it was hard for BITS to find a winner on the park although they had some useful contributions from Dan Coxen who kicked 2 goals and youngsters Simon Clarke and Daniel Hunt.
To wrap up the weekend in the Reserve grade fixtures we saw Glenmore defeat Panthers 6.7.43 - 2.12.24 at RCG, BITS defeated Yeppoon 13.10.88 - 6.10.46 and Gladstone defeated Brothers 15.8.98 - 5.5.35.
The ladders read:
Seniors- Yeppoon 8 points, Glenmore 8 Points, BITS 4 points, Gladstone 4 points, Panthers 0 points and Brothers 0 points.
Reserves- Glenmore 8 points, BITS 8 points, Yeppoon 4 points, Gladstone 4 points, Brothers 0 points, Panthers 0 points.
