Brothers AFC continued their dream run with a win over the top of the table Rockhampton Panthers on the weekend. It was Brothers fifth win in the past six games, after a bad start to season where they lost their first seven games. The Roos are still a chance to make the finals however they have to win their last two games while Gladstone needs to lose their last two. After 13 rounds the Trend Interiors Carpet & Tile Court AFL Capricornia ladder has BITS Saints on top with 34 points followed by Glenmore and Panthers on 32 and Gladstone on 26. Brothers are six points behind the Mudcrabs with 20 premiership points.
The Panthers were behind right from the start against Brothers after Brothers kicked 3 goals to 1 in the first quarter in wet conditions. Panthers tried hard in the second quarter to peg back the lead and were only 8 points down at half time. The second half saw Brothers experienced players Scott Smithwick and Matt Coleman take control of the match. The Roos managed to keep the Panthers goalless in the third while kicking one themselves. The last quarter was an even contest with Brothers holding out to register their fifth win of the season. Ben Kneen, Clint Evans and Liam Kronk tried hard for the Panthers while Ray Stock, Brad Burns and Bendy O’Brien were named best for Brothers.
It was a finals like atmosphere at Clinton Park with both the Glenmore Bulls and the Gladstone Mudcrabs looking for a top two spot. Glenmore got of to a quick start but was inaccurate while the Mudcrabs made the most of their opportunities to be up by a point at the first break. Glenmore continued to struggle in front of goal in the second quarter while Gladstone consolidated their lead. Charlie Johnstone was dominating for the Muddies in the middle while utility Shane Fowler used his height and speed on the wing. The Bulls pulled away in the third quarter keeping Gladstone goalless while kicking 3.10 themselves. The Bulls continued to pull away in the last quarter with coach Dean Woosnam kicking 3 goals for the game in their 26 point win. Nathan Smith, Ricky Windridge and Jason Smallcoombe were among Gladstone better players while Tim Mackrill, Luke Mackie and Shane Fowler were the best players for Glenmore.
BITS Saints took back top spot over the Yeppoon Swans at Boyne Island Oval. The result was never in doubt with the Saints pilling on 7 goals in the first quarter. The Swans improved in the second quarter matching it with the powerful Saints however the Saints still had a convincing 36 point lead at the half. The Saints kicked another 7 goals in the third quarter with Scott Muller the focal point kicking six goals for the game. Daniel Watkin was outstanding in the forward line for Yeppoon kicking 5 goals and was well supported by Chris Blanchard. The Saints ended up winning by 80 points with Darren Boase also contributing 6 goals while Damon Stebbings and Hayden Coleman were named best for the Saints. Wes Kelly and Nicholas Dempster were among the best for Yeppoon.
In the Reserves Gladstone were too good for the Glenmore Bulls, Panthers had a 102 point win over Brothers and the BITS Saints were too good for Brothers. Next weeks games:
