Game Report.
On Friday 23rd of September 2011, boys from all over North Queensland travelled to Townsville for a Training and Pool session before taking on Sandgate Under16s Football Club, who are the powerhouse of the Brisbane Juniors competition.
We all arrived at Tony Ireland Stadium around 4pm for our training session and team meeting. After a quick pool recovery session we head off to dinner at Fasta Pasta while the Sandgate boys had an early training session and had their dinner at La Porchetta.
North Queensland boys stayed at the Banjo Paterson Motel and all watched the Magpies v Hawks game from the G, what a great game for the boys witnessed it certainly had the boys ready to play the following day. The next morning the boys were all up nice and early for a light breakfast and then ventured down to the Strand for nice long walk and stretch.
The game started right on 3pm in very hot and humid conditions which certainly benefited our group who play in these conditions regularly. The game was a very even contest in the first half but after half time our run and carry really started to tell on our rivals. We eventually went on to win the game 15. 17. 107 to Sandgate 2. 1. 13.
All players played their roles in a very good team performance. Some players that played well I thought Mackay’s young ruckmen Hayden Land dominated in the middle and around stoppages to give us first use of the ball. Alex Jokovich had a very good game on his wing and the Capricornia boys were contributed well. James Royes playing between Centre half Back and Centre half forward and Stewart Williams in the forward pocket. James was solid down back and continued to provide a target up forward while Stewart dazeld sandgate with his pace and a long 55 meter goal late in the game to put the icing on the cake for the Nth QLD boys.
I am sure all players that have taken part in the games over the last two weeks in Townsville will benefit greatly from these development games. Hopefully these weekends will grow because it will only help our players with regards to their development in our great game and as young men.
All players in the North Queensland All Stars Team now have a small break before they will be put through their paces with Gold Coast SUNS Academy manager Andrew Johnson. Screen testing in Capricornai is on Tuesday 18th October 2011 at CQ university and all players being tested should have received a letter from the Gold Coast SUNS.
We wish all players the very best with the testing and football going forward into next season. I would also like to thank all parents who support this wonderful concept.
Yours in football
Scott Smithwick
