TREND INTERIORS CARPET AND TILE COURT AFL CAPRICORNIA ROUND 8 WRAP UP
GLADSTONE 7.11.53 DEFEATED BY YEPPOON 14.9.93 @ CLINTON PARK
Yeppoon travelled down to Gladstone to take on the Muddies at Clinton Park looking to put the loss before the break behind them and get back on the winners sheet. After the first quarter saw a very even contest with plenty of representative players playing to the potential displayed the week before, the Swans started to fire. A seven goal to two second quarter saw Yeppoon charge into halftime with a more then handy five goal lead. Yeppoon continued their strong work in both attack and defense as they stemmed the flow out of the Muddies midfield and although Mick Keller kicked four goals for the game disrupted his influence as Yeppoon kicked three goals as they kept Gladstone goalless in the third quarter to put the result beyond doubt. Gladstone fought hard in the final quarter and although winning the quarter by three goals to two left the run far too late as Yeppoon ran out comfortable 40 point winners. The final score reading Yeppoon 14.9.93 to Gladstone 7.11.53. Best Players for Yeppoon were Briggs, Tom Watkins, Blanchard, Wallin (2 goals), Munro and Dempster while Tim Higgins kicked 3 goals for the victors. The Muddies best were Keller (4 goals), Shane Eilola (2 goals), Johnstone, Saddlier, Bayles and Parnaby. Gladstone will be trying to put this loss behind them as they travel to Kele Park to play the improving Roo's while Yeppoon will host Glenmore at Swan Park in the top of the table clash which will hopefully be a repeat of the four point thriller witnessed in Round 4.
GLENMORE 8.7.55 DEFEATED BY BITS 10.13.73 @ STENLAKE PARK
This clash saw both sides looking to make a statement on the AFL Capricornia league and after the first quarter it looked like Glenmore were the team. The Bulls worked hard and got plenty of footy but failed to put the damage on the scoreboard as they went into quarter time 2 goals clear. The second quarter saw the Bulls continue as they left off and continued to control the footy through the corridor and made sure that the Saints midfield had little to no influence on the game. With the possession favoring Glenmore and a four goal lead aiding the home side the Saints dug deep and when the Saints finally made the most of the vast spaces of the Stenlake Park pitch they strung together a couple passages of play which lead to them pegging back the margin to 2 goals at half time. The third quarter saw a much more even contest and with scores remaining low it meant every goal was going to be very handy to either side. With the wind blowing in the Bulls direction the BITS players took it upon themselves to use their run and open up the midfield and went on to win the quarter four goals to three to trail at three quarter time by four points to open up what promised to be a very tight contest sure to keep the fans on the edge of their seats. As the home crowd had hoped the Bulls started the stronger of the two sides and after the home side put the margin out to 10 points the home crowd sensed their boys were going to repeat the last quarter effort witnessed at Boyne Island in Round 5. However, this wouldn’t be the case thanks mainly to the freakish ability of Daniel Hunt (4 goals) up forward as well as the intense pressure thrown onto the Bulls defense from the BITS forward line and midfield. BITS went onto kick the final 4 goals of the quarter as Glenmore struggled to find the run they needed and ended up being very disappointing 18 point victims to the under strength BITS Saints. Best players for the Saints were Caveny, Sims, Bywater, Mountjoy (2 goals) and Hunt while for the Bulls the best were Murphy, Fowler, Gavin Mackie, Aaron Russell, Mackrill and Tyson Payne. The Bulls can be sure to be put through their paces on the track by coach Woosnam this week as they attempt to win back some respect against the top of the table Swans at Swan Park while the Saints travel up to Rocky again to play the fast improving Panthers at the RCG.
PANTHERS 15.11.101 DEFEATED BROTHERS 13.13.91 @ RCG
At the Rockhampton Cricket Ground we saw another battle between the Roo Boys and Panthers come mid Saturday afternoon. The Roos had a handy lead in the first 15 minutes of the game, but three occasions of poor discipline from Brothers saw Parkhurst take the easy goals by kicking three quick ones from the penalties to make it a small margin going into the second quarter. The second and third quarters were tight affairs with both sides under pressure, with some silky football played by both teams, but Parkhurst were still four goals ahead going into the last break. The last quarter was a blockbuster with the Roo Boy’s turning the tables around kicking a few goals to be in the lead by a couple of points, in the dire stages of the match the rather large man Kaufman kicked a goal to put Parkhurst back in the lead by 4 points, and a 50m penalty going the panthers way sealed the deal for the home side, winning by 10 points. Both teams will take a bit away from this match with Panthers hoping to be around the top of the ladder come finals time, and The Roo boys still fine tuning a few things with many close matches this year, hoping for a turn around as they did last season.
