Round 6 Trend Interior Tile and Carpet Court AFL Capricornia Wrap Up
Gladstone Mudcrabs 8.6.54 defeated BITS Saints 7.6.48 @ Clinton Park
The game between Gladstone and BITS saw fierce rivals play off in the second night game of the season. Gladstone hosted BITS under lights at Clinton Park and gave the crowd plenty to cheer about. With both sides chasing their third win of the season and to move into outright third position a lot was at stake. In the opening quarter only one point could separate the sides, in the Saints favor. The second quarter saw another very tight, low scoring quarter. Both sides struggling to put their emphasis on the game and the footy had to be won around the many packs formed. BITS made more of their opportunities to go into the main break 7 points clear of the Muddies. BITS midfield (Shipard, Caveny, Dickenson) lifted there workload again in the third quarter but as the first two quarters had shown it wasn’t going to be easy. Once again the crowd witnessed a tough contest with goals being hard to come by and when the three quarter time siren had sounded BITS had pushed 14 points clear courtesy of a 2 goal – 1 quarter. Coming into the final quarter and with the home crowd urging their side to victory the Muddies pushed hard in the final term trying to reduce the margin. With their young brigade (Coles, Eilola Brothers, Clay) and some old heads (Stanley, Yasso) finding the football the Muddies looked sure to pull off a big win. The Muddies were able to pull tight and kick 3 goals while at the other end BITS could only muster a solitary point for the quarter to see the Muddies get over the line in another great rivalry round win by 6 points 8.6.54 to 7.6.48. Best Players for the Mudcrabs were Coles, Shane and Stephen Eilola, Stanley and Maddock with Bayles and Cutuli kicking two goals while for BITS Caveny, McClure, Thredgold and Shipard were the best performed players while Bywaters was useful kicking 2 goals for the Saints.
Panthers 13.10.88 defeated Glenmore Bulls 9.6.60
In what always proves to be a good contest by arguably the leagues two biggest rivals we saw the Panthers rack up their second consecutive win and kick start their season over a less then impressive Glenmore outfit. In a game which many had hoped would live up to the one point thriller seen in Round 2 of the season Glenmore failed to get out the blocks. Panthers ran riot in the first quarter and dominated play from their half backline and midfield. With Sutton, Clifford and McAleese finding plenty of football it made it hard for the Bulls backline to deal with the constant delivery of football. Going into quarter time Panthers were all smiles holding a more than useful 19 point lead. The second quarter threatened to see Glenmore fall away from the contest as Panthers came out strong and dominated early proceedings kicking a couple of early goals through Bretherton. But with pride on the line Glenmore finally hit their straps and still with the addressing from coach Woosnam ringing in their ears dug deep to claw the lead back and went into halftime trailing by 17 points. The third quarter saw the Bulls come out firing and with a couple of players playing to stay apart of the mix in following rounds the Bulls managed to pile on 21 unanswered points and hit the lead leading into three quarter time. However, not to be outdone Panthers had a surge late in the quarter and took their opportunity in both hands booting a major to lead by 2 points at three quarter time. With the game back on and the crowd sensing a major boil over as had been witnessed many times already in the season with Panthers fourth quarter fadeouts, Glenmore struggled to find their straps early on. Panther’s midfield really dug in deep and moved the footy forward quickly and with Bretherton and Guard finding plenty of football Panthers put the final nail in the Bulls coffin early to sew up a great victory with a 5 goal to 1 quarter. The final score reading Panthers 13.10.88 to the Bulls 9.6.60. Best players for Panthers were McAleese, Sutton, Bretherton (6 goals), Sander, Roati and Guard (3 goals) while for Glenmore captain Aaron Russell worked hard getting some support from Darcy Payne, Chris Murphy and Greg Piggott (2 goals).
Brothers Roos 9.5.59 defeated by Yeppoon Swans 14.10.94 @ Kele Park
In what was seen to be a one sided game in round one Brothers Roo’s would have been keen to jump into the swans at Kele Park. It was the Swans though who came out in the first quarter firing shocking the Roo boys with a 4 goal to 1 quarter. The Roo boys responded in the second stanza after well directed old fashioned “Spray” from the coach playing a more accountable brand of football to come out slightly behind for the quarter with some wayward kicking. The second half saw the Roo’s take it up to the Swans with a 5 goal to 3 third quarter. In the final quarter the crowd started to get involved and made some noise which is great to see as the game ebbed and flowed between either ends of the ground. In the end though it was the Swans ability to finish off with 4 goals to the Roo’s wasteful 1. The Swans made full use of the return of Wesley Hawk with 3 goals and providing a mobile target up forward. He was supported well from Tim Higgins also with 3 goals. For Brothers it was left to two few to carry the load with Cam Adam, Adam Williams playing well around the ground and Scott Smithwick and Michael Rose contributing 5 goals between them.
In the Reserves we saw both BITS and Yeppoon win comfortably over Gladstone and Brothers respectively with Clarke kicking 5 for BITS and Bibby 6 for Yeppoon. In the other game between Panthers and Glenmore we saw Panthers take home the honors in a much closer, lower scoring match by 2 goals. The scores read BITS 15.8.98 defeated Gladstone 7.7.49, Yeppoon 15.12.102 defeated Brothers 1.1.7 and Panthers 8.6.54 defeated Glenmore 6.7.43.
The ladders read:
Seniors: Yeppoon 24 points, Glenmore 16 points, Gladstone 12 points, BITS 8 points, Panthers 8 points, Brothers 4 points.
Reserves: BITS 24 points, Panthers 16 points, Yeppoon 16 points, Glenmore 12 points, Gladstone 4 points, Brothers 0 points.
