The CQU Rockhampton Panthers have taken out this years Trend Interiors Carpet Court AFL Capricornia Grand Final defeating the BITS Saints by 22 points in a high quality match. For the Panthers the Grand Final win caps off a great year where the team went from second last in 2006 to undefeated premiers in 2007 with a 17 and 0 record.
The match that was well and trully in the balance at three quater time with the Saints holding onto a 9 point lead, both sides had thrown every thing at each other and had their share of the play. The Panthers to their credit finished full of run to take out their first Grand Final since 1993 and send their suporters in to huge celebration.
The Panthers were fast ot of the blocks opening up a 3 goal lead after 15 minutes with their midfield and forwards well on top. The Saints however staged a massive turn around to completley dominate the next 2 and half quaters and probably could have lead by more than the slender 9 point lead they held at three quater time.
The Saints use of the ball was fantastic and looked set to cause a major boil over until the Panthers applied unrelenting pressure in the final quater to ge back on top and evenyually get in a winning postition.
The best on ground honors went to Liam Kronk who caped off a memorable year after winning the Berrnie Gottke medal and also the 2007 flag.
In the reserve grade Grand Final the Glenmore Bulls proved too good for the Panthers running out 20 point winners.
