A controlled display in wet and heavy conditions saw the might of the Saints return to the premiers mantle by defeating Brothers in the 2006 Trend Interiors Carpet Court Premiership Grand Final. Boyne Island lead from the outset and fought off a spirited challenge in the third quarter to be victorious 10.9 (69) to 6.5 (41)
Under 17 player Jake Mostert playing in his second grand final for the day was the best on ground performer. Mostert covered more ground than most others and was instrumental in getting the ball forward for Darren Boase to capitalise. In a day not suited to the big men it was a battle for possessions on the ground to which the Saints out gunned their opponents. BITS kicked two goals in the first term and 6 behinds to take the lead. That was then extended at the main break to lead 6.6 (42) to the Roos 3.2 (20).
The third term held Brothers in good stead winning possessions and with a long range goal to Tim Grose it seemed the Roos were back in it trailing by 2 goals. A late serge from the Saints and two quick goals on the end of the term to Darren Boase and George Morgan put them back on their winning way. The last term was a battle of wills with neither team able to break away nor close the gap. Along with Mostert, Danny Anderson was dangerous in the forwards, Boase kicked 6 goals and veteran Damon Stebbings closed of many Brothers opportunities n the backs. For Brothers full forward Clint Ennis kicked 5 of his teams six goals, Matt Coleman was good at the ground level and Brett Fragiacommo provided plenty of run.
The Reserve Grade final saw Yeppoon Swans down the Gladstone Mudcrabs 11.8 (74 to 5.7 (37). The Swans lead at every change and were not threatened after a four goal second term. The wet conditions dictated that the four goal lead at half time was going to be a big challenge for the opposition to overcome. To the Muddies credit they were not about to lay down ensuring that Yeppoon needed to continue to keep the scoreboard tuning over. Best for the Swans were Bradley Palmer in the rucks, David Bibby at full forward and Shane Yore in the back line. Among Gladstone's best were Andrew Hinds and Richie Spittall.
In the Junior matches leading up to the senior games, the U/13 Gladstone Mudcrabs were winners over Yeppoon 6.2 (38) to 0.3(3), U/15 Yeppoon were victors over BITS Saints 7.14(56 to 2.4(16). Both games were played in rainy conditions making to difficult to create flowing play. The rain eased slightly for the U/17 encounter were BITS defeated Glenmore 4.11 (35) to 3.11 (29). Many had written the Glenmore Bulls of before the match but true to their fighting spirit they ensured spectators were on the edge of the seats until the final whistle.
While the match day organiser's were concerned the wet weather may keep spectators away it was not the case with an estimated crowed of aproximatley1500 filling the Rockhampton Cricket Ground through the day. They were also entertained with the Paul Archer's Good Guys hand ball competition, the DDS Cheer Squad and Wizard Home Loans promotional footballs given away by the Senior players before the match.
