The Baralaba competition was another great success in Term 3 of 2012. This year we had Moura, Baralaba and Woorabinda State Schools participating in a four week competition held at Baralaba touch fields. It was a very tight competition with all three teams having quality players which made for very close games throughout the four weeks; the biggest winning margin of the competition was 17 points which is a reminder of how close the three teams were.
The initiative for the competition is pretty well self explanatory; No School No Play. A high number of students not going to school in the region is a great concern. These rural communities obviously don’t have as much to offer for students compared to the regions larger towns in Rockhampton, Gladstone and Emerald. The No School No Play competition is a great incentive for students who are at school and are behaving well. Reports from schools indicate that student attendance throughout the year has slowly become a better statistic.
The finals week saw Baralaba beat Woorabinda in the semi final, last year’s premiers Moura came out on top against Baralaba in the dying seconds to be the Grand Final winners for 2012. The PE teachers from all three schools were a fantastic help throughout the four weeks which is a sure sign that AFL Queensland’s work in regional QLD has proven that Australian Football is alive and well in the country. Nick Hills from Woorabinda, Tyson Newell from Baralaba and Simone McConnell from Moura have all said they will be locked in for volunteers again for next year. Schools from Duaringa and Biloela have shown expressions of interest to be involved in the competition in 2013.
