Round 7 AFL Capricornia Trend Interiors Carpet and Tile Court Wrap Up
Round 7 of the Trend Interiors Carpet and Tile Court AFL Capricornia Premiership Season has thrown up some interesting results and has left the battle for the top 4 wide open with every team still a mathematical chance of finding a spot in the finals race. Wins to Panthers and BITS have helped them salvage some breathing space while a win for Glenmore has consolidated there spot in the top 2 against a very persistent Mudcrabs outfit. The first loss of the season for ladder leaders Yeppoon has brought them back to the pack while Brothers are still a chance even after a disappointing showing at Boyne Country Club.
Yeppoon Swans 14.10.94 defeated by Panthers 15.8.98 @ Swan Park
Heading down the highway to play at Yeppoon is a tough ask for all teams and none more so then when facing an undefeated Yeppoon Swans. This was the ask of the Panthers Football Club and although coach Wayne Ling knows the Swans team very well it was still a daunting task for his boys in black and white. As was expected the Swans continued where they had left off in the previous encounter between the two sides blowing the game apart in the first quarter kicking 6.5 to the Panthers 2.0 with a strong breeze. The second quarter saw a much more even quarter with goals still flowing through at a constant interval and although the Panthers side outscored the Swans five goals to 3 they still had much to do in the game as they entered halftime 16 points behind. After a big spray from coach Ling where some “home truths” were dealt out a much better side hit the park in the third quarter and dominated proceedings against the breeze, kicking 6 goals to 3 to have scores all even at three quarter time. Brett Motton got his boys together and rallied them on. Yeppoon hit the pitch running hard and with Justin Roth stepping up from the Reserves and kicking true the Swans had pulled ahead by 2 kicks and looked to have the match sewn up but as has been witnessed over the last few weeks Panthers have found an ability to play good footy in the final term stringing 3 goals together, two goals late to Kaufman to get up over the Swans by 4 points. The final score reading 15.8.98 to 14.10.94. Best players for Panthers were Clifford, Kronk, Guard (2 goals), Ryan and Ennis (5 goals) while for Yeppoon the best were Robertson, Nicholls, Dan Watkin, Hawke, Blanchard and Roth (5 goals).
Glenmore Bulls 18.7.115 defeated Gladstone Mudcrabs 11.9.75 @ Stenlake Park
The third placed Muddies travelled up to a very hungry Glenmore team trying to redeem its stance on the league after a disappointing loss against Panthers the week before. The game saw some big ins for Glenmore with the return of captain Thompson, Mangan and forward sneak Imrie from injury while Gladstone were missing some important players. The game was played in great spirits with a couple of little scuffles throughout the day. But, it was Glenmore who started the game much better kicking 3 quick majors to pull away but the Muddies dug deep to kick the final 2 goals of the quarter to trail the Bulls by a goal at quarter time. The second quarter saw the Muddies start the stronger of the two teams kicking the opening goal of the quarter in the first minute and if it hadn’t have been for some poor kicking they could’ve been further in front. With the game threatening to go in the favour of the Muddies the Glenmore boys strung some good passages of play together and after a mind fade from the Muddies backline resulted in Glenmore kicking two goals back to back courtesy of Imrie the Bulls went into halftime 20 points clear. The Bulls went into the third quarter looking to put the game away with the Muddies boys slowing down after some had doubled up and the Bulls ran riot kicking 7 goals to 2 in the third and lead by 52 points. The final quarter saw the Muddies add some respect to the score line outscoring the Bulls six goals to four but the damage was already done as the Bulls ran out 40 point victors and remain two games clear in second place. The final score reading 18.7.115 to 11.9.75. Best players for the Bulls were Derek Mangan (6 goals), Cameron Imrie (3 goals), Tyson Payne, Aaron Russell, Tim Mackrill (3 goals) and Shayne ‘Finlando’ Fowler while for the Muddies the best were Ben Coles (2 goals), Nick Stanley, David Alexander (2 goals) and Dale Sparkman while Coleiro kicked 3 goals for the Muddies.
BITS Saints 27.23.185 defeated Brothers Roos 4.10.34 @ Boyne Country Club
In the final contest of the round we saw a very understrength Roos team hit the field against the BITS Saints with both sides chasing a much needed win to stay in touch with the top 4. But it was adamant from the start that this game was going to be a complete reversal from their round 4 encounter where Brothers got up by more than 10 goals. BITS chasing their third win of the season completely outplayed Brothers all over the park with winners for the Roos being hard to find with Duane Adams and youngster John ‘Munggans’Sleford putting their hand up for the visitors. The Saints won every quarter of this game as they piled on 27 goals on their way to a 151 point win and boost them back into a three way jam for third spot with Panthers and Gladstone all on 12 points. The BITS side put the game away in the first quarter kicking 8 goals to 2, before kicking 5 in the second, 8 in the third and 6 in the final term and had it not been for some poor kicking at goal at times the score line could have been more one sided as the Saints kicked 23 minor scores for the match. Best players for BITS were Tyson Murphy (2 goals), Danny Anderson, Lucas Hall (6 goals), Lachlan Boddington, Nathan Shipard (5 goals) and Daniel Hunt (5 goals) while for Brothers Duane Adams shone kicking 2 goals, Scott Smithwick, John Sleford and Darrell Newsome all worked hard.
Reserve Grade
In the Reserves results favoured Panthers 6.11.47 over the Swans 6.5.41, Glenmore 11.11.77 over Gladstone 6.1.37 and BITS 14.7.91 over a much better performed Roos team 10.7.67. The results now seem to have sorted out our top 4 for the Reserve grade although both Gladstone and Brothers are still mathematical chances of making the finals should they turn their seasons around.
The ladders read:
Seniors – Yeppoon 24 points, Glenmore 20 points, BITS 12 points, Panthers 12 points, Gladstone 12 points, Brothers 4 points.
Reserves – BITS 28 points, Panthers 20 points, Glenmore 16 points, Yeppoon 16 points, Gladstone 4 points, Brothers 0 points.
