AFL Capricornia legend John Broad will be inducted into the AFL Queensland Hall of fame. Apart from being an outstanding member of the community John has been an active volunteer for AFL Capricornia for the past 22 years. John has served as President, Secretary and Registrar for AFL Capricornia and has also held numerous committee positions at the Panthers AFC in the 80’s and 90’s. The reserve grade competition was also introduced by John Broad in 1982 as well as U/11’s, U/13’s, U/15’s and U/17’s junior football. In recent years John was elected President of the AFL Capricornia League in 2000 (a position he held until 2005) and has produced football records for the finals series. The best on field medal during the annual Capricornia Representative match was named the John Broad medal in appreciation of all his efforts. John has been involved in almost every aspect of AFL football in the Capricornia region from junior to senior competitions, umpiring to committees and has been the key player in the development of AFL facilities in the region.
Outside AFL John was elected to the Rockhampton City Council in 1982 and served as the chairman of the Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee from 1982 to 1990 and again from 2000 to 2008. During this time he initiated a concept called “The New Deal for Sport”. The concept converted derelict sporting grounds to fully irrigated, properly fenced and maintained fields and of course Australian Football Clubs benefited markedly from this program (as did all of the other sports). Currently, John serves as the League Media Officer and also keeps time at all Panthers home games and does the announcing and timekeeping at our u/9s and u/11s every Friday night. Congratulations to John on his acceptance into the AFL Queensland Hall of Fame. It is a nomination he has thoroughly deserved.
