After the weekends round 4 matches of the Trend Interior Carpet Court AFL C season two things were made pretty clear, the Mudcrabs and the Panthers last years bottom two sides appear to be the real deal in 2007 at this early stage of the season.
The Panthers and Saints played out one of the best games played in recent seasons at the Rocky Cricket Ground with the Panthers winning an absorbing and quality contest by 10 points 17-9-111 to 16-5-101. The game was played in two halves with the Panthers dominating the first half and the Saints doing likewise in the second half. It's only early but you would think both sides will figure heavily in finals. Clinton Ennis was unstopable for the Panthers kicking 9 while for the Saints Key big man Mark Thomas was very influential in the second half.
The Mudcrabs recorded their most comprehensive victory in two seasons running over the disapointing Bulls on their home turf by 48 points 16-13-109 to 8-13-61. The Muddies have sent a message to all other teams in the competition that they will be a serious contender in 2007. The Bulls will need to make a quick recovery from the heavy loss with a huge round 5 match looming with the Yeppoon Swans. For the muddies big men Ntahn Tessier and Jason Smallcombe were keys to the victory while for the Bulls Toby and Tyson Payne along with Greg Smith were solid contributors.
The Roos traveled down to Swan Park and ran into a rampant swans outfit hell bent on wiping any memory of their loss to the Panthers in round 3 and were no match for the slick Swans going down by 27 goals 26-23-179 to 2-4-16. For the Swans Tent Rapp and Wes Hawke dominated with 7 goals each while for the Roos Duane Adams was a standout performer. The Ladder after 4 rounds: Panthers 16, Yeppoon 12, BITS 8, Gladstone 8, Glenmore 4, Brothers 0. In the reserves competition winners were the Panthers, Bulls and Swans.
There will be no games this weekend for the Labor Day long weekend. Games resume with round 5 on the 12/5/07 with Brothers hosting the Panthers, Glenmore hosting Yeppoon and the Mudcrabs hosting the Saints.
